My yorkie is having tremors off/on - worried!

He has a vet appt, but they cannot get him in until the 14th. He has bad teeth, don't know if this is a pain issue? I was also wondering if maybe he has diabetes. He is 10 years old. I have a lot of health issues so haven't walked him much (but he plays a lot around the house) so 2 weeks ago I walked him down to the mailbox. When I put his harness on I could tell he had lost weight. The other day he drank so much water, several times. For the last 2 nights he will not sleep and scratches to get out of his crate. He shakes uncontrollably and won't settle down or let me hold him. It just happened again after I fed them this afternoon (he inhales his food, he doesn't chew it). Took about 20 minutes but he finally settled down and it stopped and he is resting. During/after this time, he is not following me around the house like he always does. I am VERY upset. He is my best friend. I am so worried. Has anyone else experienced this at all? Several months ago I lost my girl Bella as she suffered from addisons disease since she was 2 (she was 11) and I cannot do that again. I am so sick to my stomach. Is this a "true" emergency as there is another doctor at the clinic, but I just do not trust him like I do my normal vet. My boy also has collapsing trachea issues and is going to have to have teeth pulled. The other vet put him on a very short, tapering dose of steroids for it like 8 months ago and that was it. Feeling a bit frantic.

I wouldn't wait...if you don't trust the other vet, I would find one well rated and go there.

Please get him to a vet, you can't wait so long for an appt. I know you would rather see a familiar vet, but if you can't persuade him to see your dog now, you have to go elsewhere. So sorry he is having these worrying symptoms. Can't see having a dental until you know what ails the poor dog.

I dont understand some of these vets.....if I call and say I have a sick dog, and I think with the symptoms she is having she needs to be seen asap, they will tell me to bring the pup in and they will work us in or if she is in distress, they see her immediately! It is a walk in and the may charge extra for that, but your pup needs to be seen, by SOME vet!! Wait until after 7pm and go to an emergency vet hospital if there is a good one and you have no other options for a vet....your baby needs to be seen.....

Thanks guys. I called earlier, the soonest they could get me in with a different vet was 4/11, my other appt. is 4/14. I said no thanks. I was told to call back in the morning and see if my vet can squeeze me in. My dog is totally fine now. Playing, no shaking, etc. I think he has diabetes or maybe low blood sugar problem. Poor little guy.

Even 4/11 is too far away. I am glad your baby is feeling better now, but suspected diabetes is not trivial and if not diagnosed and treated could get serious. You say he had other issues as well including teeth cleaning, and these need attention.
Please get another vet, these long wait times are not right. What symptoms does a dog need for this vet to fit you in today or tomorrow?
My vet will always fit us in the same day or at least the next if my dog is sick.
I am sorry, but I can't imagine waiting weeks to get my dog seen.

Why is it taking so long to get a vet appointment? Pebbles was not feeling well last week and I called Monday morning. She was seem within 25 MINUTES of my call! You need to find a new vet if they cannot fit you in for weeks!

WOW on that time schedule for a Vet Appt. I call mine and get in right away.

I would most certainly be looking for another Vet that can see your baby now.

If the idea of getting a different vet is not what you want for some reason, I would call them back today and tell them that she is sick and that you want to bring her in today.
If they don't hear that, then you definitely need to switch vets.

I would get to a vet ASAP as well. Since you are leaning towards either diabetes or low blood sugar, would it be possible to purchase or use a home glucose monitor so you can get an idea of what blood sugar levels are? I hope all is well for your little one.

I am with most here, I quite frankly will just show up at my vets. She is in distress - maybe not right this moment but has been. They have always worked me in that day - and I might not get to see my regular vet - but he will always follow up with me on the visit. I have shown up when the office opens!


My secondary plan would be to go to an emergency hospital, if I could not get seen that day.

You need a new vet. If you tell a vet that your dog is shaking (which can be a sign of pain) and they tell you they can't see you for weeks... then that vet has WAY too many doggie patients. Do them and your baby a favor. Cut down on his patient overload and find one who has time to "Care" about your dog possibly being in pain. The one you currently have obviously doesn't care at all.


My vet can and is usually slammed- but when Chanel had her stroke (which started as tremors) He said bring her NOW. We were there in 10 minutes and she was in full out stroke when we got there. He made time for us like this more than once. He would also call and check on her if she had something done ( like when she needed an transfusion because of anemia due to the low protein diet she was on for he kidneys) But either way.. you need a vet who will be there when you and your dog need him or her.


By the way excessive water drinking can be a sign of kidney problems or diabetes. Don't forget to mention that to your vet.


I can't imagine the rage I would feel if I thought my dog was in pain or could possibly have an emergency situation and some danged vet told me "I'll get to them in 2 weeks" Grrrrrrr!

All vets have emergency appts they squeeze in you just have to empasize its an emergency
