| My yorkie puppy won't stop scratching until he bleeds :( Hello everyone, I am seeking some advice. My puppy has been scratching his face, mostly his eyes for the past month. I went to see the vet twice and she prescribed him different medications but nothing seems to work I have a feeling he might have allergies but the vet told me "puppy's don't have allergies that young". My yorkie is only 5 months old and it makes me very sad to see him like this. Obviously something in his eyes is bugging him but I can't figure out what!!! He cry's at night and try's to rub his face on anything he can find. We haven't changed anything in his routine. I also bought him soap free shampoo for dry, itchy skin and I gave him his last bath 2 weeks ago. He was checked for fleas but nothing. Does anyone have suggestions for me? |

| Itchy eyes Sorry to hear of your poor pup's eye distress. If the regular vet could not help, I would see an eye specialist ASAP. First the scratching could do serious corneal damage, and second, there could be some eye issue that is causing it other than allergies? I know it will be hard on the pup not to be able to scratch the area, but could you get a hard collar to protect the eyes until you can see an eye vet? Also could the irritation be coming from the mouth/ teeth rather than the eyes? As it is in both eyes it could be allergies, but I assume the meds were given to address that? Hope you get some diagnosis soon and you baby feels better. |

| The medication in this case is only a band aid and not the cure. Sounds like an allergy for sure. I had three like that. Take him off of all store bought food and treats. Put him on red meat and rice for a couple of weeks, then add some grated carrots for another week, and then some steamed green beans. In the meantime, change his shampoo. I know I will probably get some sparks for saying this (but it worked for all three of my girls) bath him in head and shoulders plus. It has a built in conditioner so don't use anything else. Remember to rinse and rinse, making sure you get all the shampoo off the skin and coat. If these methods don't work, then I would suggest taking him to a specialist for sure. Good luck with your baby, and let us know how he does.

| Dog Ophthalmologist Yes they sure do, my dog had cataracts and I would not have trusted that delicate surgery to a regular vet. They are however rare birds and you might have to travel to see one. Hope your baby gets well soon. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Pups most certainly do have allergies, it is rare but true. Alfie has suffered from allergies since about 3 months, we were at the vet every week and they too said he was too young. We referred ourselves to a vet dermatologist and he has been through several different meds, currently mostly under control with Apoquel and Piriton. Alfie was almost totally bald on both hips with regular rash patches by the time he was 4 months. There should be pics in my albums, I would advise you to see another vet or find a vet derm.

YT 3000 Club Member | if Benadryl was given or some sort of antihistamine and it helped then it is some sort of enviromential allergy then it is not food related, chester has had allergies since around 6 months |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It would be extremely, extremely rare for a puppy to have allergies due to their immune system's maturity. BUT, it's possible. The vet MUST try Apoquel - if they can get it (it's sold out everywhere). Try that IMMEDIATELY. If you can't get that, ask them to try Temaril-P or a steroid shot...see what those do for him, if anything. If nothing works, then I'd get to a Vet Ophthalmologist asap as you don't want him damaging his eyes. What meds have been tried? Did you switch foods from what the breeder fed?

| Poor baby! I would not mess with his food yet, that is such a serious step for their young tummies. If you decide to go there you need to go slowly or you will have diarrhea to deal with. not fun. I would probably try benadryl and clean the ears with earwash. Are his ears hot/red? a tiny bit of hydrocortisone cream rubbed on the flesh of his ears may help too. These are just steps to keep him comfortable. I would still see a specialist but if they seem to give relief you will know he is allergic to something? |
