HELP!!! New puppy wont eat?!?!

Last Thursday I got an 8 week old "teacup" yorkie. He's a tiny little thing, weighing in at only .12 lbs. I just recently found out that puppies should not be separated from their mother until 10 to 12 weeks, and that it could be causing my puppy to not eat. Well, Friday he was great. He was running around and had so much energy. Saturday night he seemed to hit a wall. He slept for hours on end, and wouldn't eat or drink anything. We thought it was because he was re-homed so early. On Sunday, he started having seizures. We rushed him to the emergency vet Sunday night, and they put Karo Syrup on his gums, and he instantly bounced back up, yet the vet wanted to keep him overnight for safety measures. At around 2 AM Monday morning, his health went downhill. They then had to insert IVs, as he was barely alive. He had bloody diarrhea and still would not eat. The vet had to force feed him, and he had to stay another night. They ran all the major tests, and they all came back negative. They believe that the problem was his low blood sugar. Now he's home, and we're continuing to have to force feed him every two hours. Along with the food we're giving him, we're also giving him Nutri-Cal. We contacted the breeder, and they claimed he was fine when they had him, and to feed him the food they were using, but the vet took him off that, (because it was not nutritious enough) and put him on Royal Canin puppy mousse. He will drink water, but refuses to eat by himself. He hates being fed like this, and also hates that we have to get him up every two hours to feed him. Does anyone have any advice on how to get this little guy to eat, without forcing him? Also, is puppy formula an acceptable replacement for his food, since he's so little?

The Nutri-Cal is corn syrup, which is a form of sugar. It stops low blood sugar, but protein must be given within 20 minutes or you'll get another attack of low blood sugar. Puppies use their energy reserves so quickly, that many breeders recommend having food available 24/7. You can moisten dry food if the pup doesn't have enough teeth yet. The problem with low blood sugar is that when they have an attack, they don't want to eat anything, yet that's exactly what they need to raise their blood sugar, so that's why Nutri-cal or corn syrup can be helpful. Hypoglycemia is fairly easy to prevent, but it can be deadly with a pup this age, if he doesn't like his food, I'd find one he liked. If he has an active spurt, make sure you give him a little food, or even a few Cheerios.

If he will drink it Esbilac Goat's Milk is a good supplement. He still needs to eat something too but this would be a start and a good addition for him since he is so small. I keep mine on it at least once a day until they are 10 weeks or more. Boil some chicken breast and shred it and see if that entices him to eat. Also Pediasure Sidekick for kids (vanilla) is a good addition if he will take it. Just find something he will eat for you. Right now almost anything will help.

The girl that was selling Gizmo also was trying to sell him as a micro yorkie. I talked to the vet, as that is the first place I took him, because when I first seen him I could tell he was extremely sick, and had to get him from the girl just to have him treated.

The vet told me, there is no such thing as a teacup or micro yorkie, and some very bad breeders will actually feed them a very limited amount of food to stunt their growth, to make them tiny. It's all really very sad and horrible, and I cannot even imagine what these people are doing and how they can even sleep at night.

I also got a rx wet food fr critical care puppies, that he ate really well once he started coming around, maybe your vet might carry it? I had to spoon feed him every hour fr the first 36 hours, till he finally started coming around and the whiteness started to go away from his gums.

I don't have that many posts here, but if you go to my profile, then to statistics, you can read all of my posts and get an idea of what I went through for the last almost 3 weeks. I hope it will help and give you some good ideas, as the help I found here was invaluable to me and Gizmo :-)

He is truly one amazing loving little healthy puppy now, and his weight now is right on schedule :-) I can't feel all his bones anymore and am just so happy I found this forum :-)

We had a puppy that was older but was tiny. His foster mom had to feed him every 2 - 3 hours around the clock to keep him from being hypoglycemic.

She syringe fed him...and I believe it was Hill's A/D.

I think that was the food name of the one I got from the vet, I actually just gave the 2 cans I had left to my daughter yesterday, because her maltipoo pup went hypoglycemic :-( he's already feeling better this morning after a day of that food and the nutrical. :-)

Hope your baby is doing better. When my Cleo is feeling pukey shredded chicken breast, or no salt organic chicken broth is something she will usually eat.
