11 week old puppy throwing up Hi this is my first post here. I have an 11 week old yorkie/maltese mix named Gryffin. Last night he started coughing and threw up a small amount of clear liquid. It was right before bed and he had just gulped down a lot of water. I assumed he was drinking too fast and gagged himself. This morning I woke up to him gagging and he threw up clear liquid again about a minute later he threw up a pea sized amount that was frothy white. He seems ok now. He ate breakfast normally and was been running around playing like normal. He just finished an antibiotic to prevent a possible case of kennel cough from turning into pneumonia. Could that have something to do with it? Is this something I need to be concerned about? Having Gryffin has turned me into a super overprotective mom, so I'm not sure if this is something to worry about.

Hi and welcome. Not sure but are you making sure he is eating throughout the day? I have heard on here if pups don't eat every few hours their stomachs can get irritated and fill with stomach acid and result in nausea and vomiting. Clear or froth can mean its empty...others on here can give you more advice..

I feed him 3 times a day. He threw up right before end and in the morning though so it had been a while since he had last eaten. Maybe I should be giving him a small meal right before bed as well?

At this point, I wouldnt be concerned....just watch him and if continues to do this by this afternoon, I would take him into the vet....They can go downhill quickly with vomiting...he isnt really vomiting any amount to be concerned about dehydration with, but if it continues, you dont want to go into the weekend with a sick baby. That antibiotic could have given him a bit of a cranky tummy, gulping water quickly could have been what happened last evening, all plausable reasons for the spitting up that he is doing.....I wouldnt be worried at this point, but if he continues on during the day, or actually starts to vomit food or water, take him in.

Perhaps you could free feed or give him something to eat before bed? I feed my boy four meals a day or he tends to throw up foam occasionally. You say he was treated for suspected kennel cough, could that be connected? Hope he gets better soon with the more frequent feeds to keep his tummy busy, or off to the vet we go.

| I agree, I would free feed also. You can't overfeed a puppy and when they are as young as your baby is, they need access to food all the time. We did this when we brought our Princess Sophie home and even supplemented her dry kibble with some wet, canned food to make it more tasty so she would eat more often.

Welcome to YT! Please free feed a puppy that young! They MUST have food more often than 3 times a day. He could go down in sugar during the night and not wake up if he hasn't eaten enough to get him through the night. I'm glad you found us!

Thanks for the replies everyone! When I said I feed him 3 times a day I meant I put out fresh food 3 times a day. He never finishes it and goes back to it often, so he does have access to food all day. I usually do take it away around 9 pm to try to avoid accidents in the crate overnight though. And I give him a little nutrical right before bed like the vet instructed. I will give him access to food overnight from now on though. He has not spit up anymore today.

Sgabb928, I had a Yorkie (deceased now) that would drink water way too fast and throw it up shortly after. It was clear, maybe a bit foamy at times. It didn't seem to bother her. I don't think she gagged on it, she just drank too much for her little stomach way too fast. I would be concerned at the color of the vomit. Any off colors (dark brown, yellowish) may be a concern. If he keeps doing it, see if there are chunks in the vomit. I know it sounds gross, but if he is getting into things he shouldn't be (scraps dropped on the floor etc) it could be an indication that his body is rejecting what he got into. Clear vomit never concerned me, but when there is foam I look into it a little more. In my experience, when my 9 year old vomits foam, she got into something and I am usually right. She is rejecting the crap she ate. It may be the medication. Time will tell. If he stops vomiting soon it may be possible he had a bit of a problem with it. Also, we have a puppy too and she is taken outside ever 3-4 hours for walks and fed at the same time so she eats several times a day. I think it is difficult to expect them to eat often as their attention span is so short and they are so excited and just forget to eat, but we spend time with her every time we try feed her to make sure she at least eats some kibbles. Watch out for hypoglycemia, too! If she isn't holding weight and putting it on, she could go hypo. Not every dog will go hypo but it is a possibility with these small dogs and if they are not eating it could trigger a reaction that is not pleasant to see. Good luck and enjoy your little guy! You sould like a great owner and your puppy is lucky!
