Prissy is 5 and has this one toe nail on her back left foot that grows straight out (we call it her "Wolverine Claw")

She was a rescue so we have no idea how she got it. Besides growing 3 times as fast as her other toe nails, it has never given her any problems.

However, it is sore this week. I don't know how she could have injured it bc she was kenneled when I was at work for a few hours. But now she won't walk on her back left foot (though she still tripods it around the back yard and wants to play).

I have absolutely no problem taking her to the vet if I thought it was a big deal, but right now, I thought we would try to treat it naturally and at home.

We started soaking it in epsom salts and warm water. I might out some coconut oil on it, but she would probably lick it off 2 seconds later.

1) is licking it a bad thing?
2) is there any over the counter pain killer I should give her?

Is it a dew claw,on her leg or is it a normal claw on her toe?

It is a normal claw on her toe. The middle one, I believe.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that your baby isn't feeling well and hope finds relief very soon. If the nail isn't growing normally I would certainly take her to the vet right away because it will just keep getting injured. Doesn't really matter how it happened but it will happen again. Your vet should be able to help. Good luck!!

It maybe getting injured if it is just growing straight but you need to check if it has split as that is quite painful and needs a vet visit.

What an ordeal! We took her to the vet when I originally posted this (so about 3 weeks ago). Her toe was infected and they gave us antibiotics and medicam. There was an immediate improvement. And then last week it started acting up again. The vet trimmed off the bent part. And hopefully all is well!

If this is going to be presenting a regular problem, I think I may want to see if that nail can be removed. It is causing her pain at regular intervals and it is causing infection, requiring antibiotics at intervals. I would be considering the pros and cons of a permanent solution....

I agree that the nail should be removed to stop any further problems. Hope your little one is better soon.
