| Constipation after intestinal upset I took Twinkles to the doctor Sunday after she threw up blood. She has been very lethargic for 24 hours with no affect on her appetite. After a complete blood panel (all normal results, TG), some sub-Q fluids, take home meds and orders for a soft diet, she is still not back to her regular "poopy" schedule. I am walking her more frequently (which she likes) to increase bowel motility. The doctors on not really concerned because she is not straining to go. She had one small BM yesterday. Any thoughts or suggestions on how I can get things moving? Or should I stop worrying? Lynn

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm sorry your baby is having problems; I've heard some great things about canned pumpkin. It can help with constipation or fix diarrhea, it's very good for intestinal health. About 1 tablespoon a day, until she going regularly. I keep the rest of the can in small baggies in the freezer; it will spoil in the refrigerator after a week. It great to have some on hand, but dont get pumpkin pie filling, just the plain pumpkin.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I noticed you signature has the word "FONT="Comic Sans MS"], it also needs the word at the end of it so that the first "FONT won't show. Those are instructions and you must always have a begining and an end. If you want your signature to look like this, Lynn & Twinkles copy this: Lynn & Twinkles :lovewings

| I'd be worried about a possible blockage.... what was the blood from? What did she eat the day or two before the bloody vomit? Did the vet do an xray?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | She did say, "She had one small BM yesterday." Wouldn't that rule out a blockage? I think some medications can cause constipation too.

| Constipation after intestinal upset The dr. did not do an x-ray. He palpated her abdomen and did not feel any masses nor was Twinkles sensitive or seem to be in pain. in addition to the Sub-Q fluids, they gave her an injection of Cerania (for vomiting & nausea)and sent her home with Carafate (for stomach ulcers and can cause constipation) taken 3x's a day, floriflora (a probiotic for gas) and pepsid ac at bedtime. She is on a soft, bland diet - small frequent meals (Twinkles thinks she is in Heaven - LOL). Thanks for the pumpkin idea. I will try that. She is acting much better - no more lethargy. I guess I just have to watch her and be patient for the poops! As always, you guys are the best! A bit of an update. My living situation changed and I had to find homes for my other 3 Yorkies - Ollie, Soleil and Dubie. They are all doing great - I see them all the time and we have Yorkie reunions every couple of months. They have a ball when they get together - but are ready to go 'home' to their new family. I am now back to the beginning - just Twinkles and me!

| The intestines will still empty out below a blockage and is usually smaller than normal stool and/or can become diarrhea. Small stools and/or diarrhea are also seen with partial blockages.

| That is true. It is the same for people. (I am a retired nurse) Frequently someone with a blockage will have diarrhea. The blockage is high above that, so liquids are coming around the blockage. I am on "high alert'. I told Twikles she should think seriously about going, as she doesn't want the doctors to go in and get it...... She just give me one of her "looks" and cocks her head from one side to the other. How I love my little genius!

| Update on Twinkles: The pumpkin worked! I was doing the happy dance around the yard when she finally had a poopie! She looked at me like I was crazy! (you'd think she would be used to my antics by now!). Twinkles (and mom) is back to her old happy self! Today I am going to try a little bit of her regular food, still keeping to small meals a day. Thank you fellow Yorkie lovers for helping me through this. Miss T means everything to me.
