| Yorkie Hit by car Yesterday my yorkie was hit by a car. We rushed him to an emergency vet. At this time he could not move his back legs. Aside from that he looked fine. The vet did an xray on him and noticed a very small hairline fracture in his spine on the 6th vertebrae. Everything else with him is fine and spianl cord is fine and the spine has not moved. The vet told me if his swelling does not go down in 24 -48 hours and he cannot move his legs you should put him to sleep. This morning, not 12 hours after the accident he is wiggling his paws, when the vet puts pressure against his feet he pushes back and he has feeling again in his legs. The vet said there is still a -25% of recovery although the fact that he is moving only 12 hours later is encouraging. Should I be getting my hopes up or is there ultimately no recovery from this. Is there a chance that he can heal from this and the vertebrae will eventually heal? This happened out of town and he is not with our regular vet who is great. Has anyone experienced what I'm talking about? |

| I am so sorry that your little one has been hurt, and I pray that he recovers. There are so many dogs that lead full lives even without the use of their back legs with the use of wheels. Please look at this video and these threads about Layla. I'm so glad that your baby survived the accident and is showing signs of movement. | He is staying in the vet till Monday. Then we're heading home. My question is, the fact that he is moning is legs not 12 hours after the accident and some of the swelling has gone does that mean there is a good chance of full recovery? He is also going to the bathroom. Can he live a normal life with a slight hairline fracture in his vertebrae? The vet did say it's a very small fracture, you can only see it on one xray. On the others you can't even see it? |

| I would suggest that you ask about a specialist General vets are good for most things but with something like this a specialist would probably be better. Especially since this isn't your regular vet either. I am so sorry this has happened. I hope your sweet one recovers soon. Lisaly gave you some good threads to look at too. Keep us updated.

| I am sorry for your sweet boy and your family. Georgie was born with a congenital malformation in his spine and we didn't know until he was 6. I don't know the answer I would think only a specialist would know if he could live a normal life. I will tell you the specialist we took Georgie to is located in Annapolis Junction MD and they are amazing! Georgie wasn't walking pre-surgery and now runs and jumps. My suggestion is call the specialist below and get him in for a consult. To me the fact that he is moving his little paws is a positive sign and I would do everything I could to help him recover if not fully, enough to have a good quality of life. I meant to add PM if you need anything. Prayers for you! VOSM.com

| The vet just said he has control of his bladder and bowels. He has only moved is paw and leg slightly. Vet said it's a less than 15% chance that he just comes home and recovers on his own. |

| He has a hairline fracture in the 6th vertabrae. The vet did say it's a very small fracture. The spinal cord is fine and the spine has not moved. Has anyone heard of a dog recovering from this without surgery? |

| I am so sorry this has happened to your little guy. I would not go by what this vet is telling you percentage wise. Is he a specialist with these types of injuries? I would take the advice given by Georgie's mom and make an appt. with a vet that specializes in this area. I pray yourboy will continue to improve. |

| Dogs are tenacious and with a loving, patient owner...anything is possible. I did google the subject of dogs with such injuries, and many made miraculous recoveries. |

| You need to carefully get this baby to a specialist ASAP. If there is no spinal cord damage, that is a good thing...is he getting medication to keep the cord from swelling? THAT will cause injury to the cord and could permanenbtly paralyze him...bowel and bladder control is a good thing...is there a vet school close to where you are? He really does need to be seen by a specialist...dont do anything rash until he is seen by a specialist!!! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 11-04-2012 at 10:28 AM. |

| Change of plans... just pulled him out of the vet and got him to a specialist. He's in with the specialist now. Fingers crossed! |
