Limping episode

Deuce was playing ball with dad and after he jumped on the bed, dove into the pillows, retrieved the ball and jumped onto the ottoman and then the floor began to limp. Hubby knew something was wrong when Deuce went to his blue bed limping. This came completely out of the blue. He's never had a problem before. The Hubs massaged his hip, thigh, knee and paw and did not get any pain reaction to the touching. He was not crying or showing any reaction when we touched his leg. When he put him on the ground Deuce did not put any weight on his right rear leg. When I held him ( and of course he snuggled into my neck) he was not flexing the leg so I just massaged it for a while. He acted like he wanted to go outside so when I put him on leash he walked on all four on the sidewalk and lifted both rear legs to pee.

My heart was in my throat when I saw this happen to him. We will keep him from jumping for today and see how he behaves tomorrow. So tell me not to panic or not. At what point do I have the vet look at the leg. I'm hoping it's not LP. How long should I wait. Maybe I read too many posts on here.

Well I'm not sure how old Deuce is, but LP is easily palpated by a vet at 12wks old. So you should have some idea if the vet did examine his knees and at what point they did so. Everytime Razzle goes to the vet his knees are palpated. LP is such a common thing in all toy breeds that is seems to be standard examination protocol for general vets to do.

Lifting both rear legs to go is interesting, obviously he is in pain in either one or both rear legs. And please tell this to your vet about lifting to both rear legs to urinate.

In terms of when to go, I would have already made an appointment. I still would want my vet to look at my boy tomorrow or as early as I could get in.

I just went through this with Mikki. She does have LP. She jumped down while playing and was limping. She too would not put weight on it either. I made her rest for a few days and did not allow any jumping at all. I totally understand how you feel. I was in tears! She ended up being completely fine after resting. Deuce is 2 1/2 now. The Vet has always checked his knees at visits. In April she said she thought she felt something slip but when she tried again it felt normal. I did not note which leg it was.

When I said lifting both rear legs I didn't mean at the same time. I meant that sometimes he pees with the right leg up and sometimes he pees with his left leg up. That's not a problem, or is it? Additionally, When he pees on the pad in the basement he pees like a girl.

He seems to be fine today but cautious.

Actually it is good that he alternates legs to go. I hope there is not another incident though.

My neighbors schnauzer mix is a female. She thinks she's a boy. She does lift BOTH her rear legs so she can pee on posts and things. It is the funniest thing! I think he said it started after there had been a bunch of big dogs in the area. Not sure if it was loose dogs or people on a dog walking meet up. Anyway he thinks she was trying to cover their marking and has just kept doing it.
