| Surgery tomorrow? Miss Mia who is 24 weeks old is scheduled to be spayed tomorrow. Miss Mia in February was diagnosed with arrythmia, narrowing of the aorta and murmur. It was a firm diagnosis, two vets, two cardiologists all independent of eachother. She had echo, sonogram, xrays and ekg all came up with the same thing (my checkbook screamed at me for that one)... Anyway, last test indicated that she was outgrowing it. Tomorrow they are doing a echo and ekg prior to surgery. If she passes the tests, she will have surgery and will be staying the night on fluids etc. Send us good yt mojo tomorrow! Couple questions, do they routinely remove baby teeth during surgery? Dew Claws (not removed at birth)? Anything they can do that the pineapple can't do while they are in there? (my nervous attempt at humor)! Thanks in advance for input.

YES , THEY DO REMOVE RETAINED BABY TEETH AT THE SAME TIME. AS FAR AS REMOVING THE DEWCLAWS I FOUND THIS ARTICLE YOU MAY FIND HELPFUL.... Many dog owners choose to have the dewclaws removed when the dog is going to be spayed or neutered. Most vets will recommend that you watch your dog for a few months prior to the surgery to decide for yourself if they are having any problems with their dewclaw. Only have the dewclaw removed at this stage of their life if you feel like it may cause problems down the road. Removal of the dewclaw at an older age will require stitches and recuperation time. The healing process may also be pretty daunting as your dog will not be able to resist picking and licking at the surgery site. | |

| Thanks all for your responses! Cardiologist just called and cleared for surgery, still a slight murmur and narrowing of aorta. Vet and cardiologist said to proceed with spay. Animals and people have surgery every day with worse conditions and not to worry! 3 baby teeth have been retained and will be removed. Dew Claws are not a huge problem so will be kept intact. Miss Mia is a long, tall and skinny but a whopping 6.8 lbs.!!! We will be joining the teapot club soon!!! I still worry! Will check back in this afternoon after vet calls.

| If you spay her now at 6 months, won't the shut down of hormones affect her growth and maybe stop hert heart problems from correcting themselves?

Of course I discussed the the above with him and he said that if he thought in any way spaying her would be a hinderance to her health he would not ok to proceed and that he thought coming in he was going to nix it... but after thorough testing, he without hesitation said to proceed. Called my husband and told him the same thing as we made it clear that we did not HAVE to do this today, but I trust them and am so glad its a go!

| Miss Mia is doing fantastic! Vet called me and said she did very, very well and was up on her feet rather quickly. Said she is doing exceptionally well, so well that she can come home. She initially was going to keep her overnight (no extra charge) just to be sure, but she is doing great! Thanks all for your good wishes they worked! Said for me to call at 7:30 and if all is still well can pick up at 8pm!!! final (i hope) update later! Thanks so much
