Achilles Injury

Hey everyone!

My little man had his achilles tendon accidently snipped by a groomer. He has been hospitalized 2 hours away since Monday and had surgery today. I cannot pick him up until Friday (boo!)

He will be on crate rest for 2 months, only allowed out to use the restroom.

I did a search and did not see that anyone had any experience with this so I thought I would post and see if anyone had any tips for recovery or how to deal with an energetic little critter being crated for 8 weeks! He also suffers from anxiety and freaks out when crated for more than a few minutes and definitely when left alone (I have watched via webcam). Do you think we could get some medication to calm him?

Also, this is the 2nd time he has been injured by a groomer (actually the 3rd, but one was just a minor injury requiring 1 stitch). I dont know why we are having such bad luck with groomers :-(

I am so sorry for your little guy! How on earth did the groomer manage to injure him so severely?

I'm sure the vet will give him pain meds for at least a week or two and that will help keep him quiet. Is there someone you can trust to help look after him during his recovery time? A lot of holding will help.

I highly recommend learning to groom at home. There is a lot of info here and around the web.

OMGosh! That is insane! I pray he recovers quickly... some dogs do better in a doggie stroller, and/or an xpen (they make some with bottoms and lids). If his anxiety level is that high, I would discuss his containment with the vet and see what they suggest.

Sorry to hear about your babies injury. I had one of mine have a tear in his ACL and had surgery many years ago. The recovery wasn't too bad. Also a couple of years ago my Pixie had surgery on her knee and needed 6 weeks confinement. I used several different crates/ex pens to move her where we where and after the first week I was able to put her sister in with her. When I was in my room I used a small animal ex pen to put on my bed and put her in. At night I had a play yard with her bed in it and she did well in that. Pixie never liked being crated so I found the openness of the ex pen and play yard worked well for her. I hope your baby recovers quickly and has no more groomer accidents.

I'm so sorry! I hope the time passes quickly for you both. If you do not want to groom at home, you should definitely look for certified groomers. They have a little more professionalism and I believe that because they have bothered to become certified shows that they want to learn more and also care about safety.

So sorry about your little one. Ouch. I hope the time passes by quickly for you. We had to crate rest my Hot Rod for 6 weeks after his surgery so I totally understand. I caved and held him most of the time but I was lucky in that I was able to be home with him. Good luck and hope he has a uneventual recovery.

He is finally home!

The vet said I can give him benadryl to help calm him (the meds they have for anxeity would be too much based on his weight).

Yorkieusa, what is a certified groomer? I thought they were all certified?!?!

Certainly hope your groomer is paying for this! How dreadful....
