| bladder stone I am new to yorkie forum. Has anyone experienced this problem? Pasha, my 10 yr old yorkie had surgery to remove a calcium oxalate stone. After 7 weeks, he is still straining to pee. When he does pee his flow is very slow. He walks around the rest of the time squatting without peeing, maybe a drop or two. He is on antibiotics and has been for all of this time. He has now also begun to strain when trying to poop. I'm starting to wonder if his prostate is involved somehow. Going to the vet Fri. to get his prostate checked. Sound familiar to anyone? |

| My Brody had bladder stones when he was 7 years old. He had surgery and within a day no more straining to urinate. What you are discribing is everything he did before surgery, So for sure I would be taking him back to the vet, Something is wrong if he still has these issues. Brody never strained to poop. Good Luck!!

| Hi, welcome to Yorkie Talk I never had this problem with one of my dogs, but my male nuetered cat was completely blocked from struvite crystals. After his surgery he was kept at the vet hospital for 48 hours with a urinary catheter remaining in to help prevent re-blocking. Was he put on a prescription diet from your vet following his surgery? That helps alot, I kept my cat on it for a month before switching back to his regular food. My cat did have some straining and frequent litter box using for about a week after he came home, but was 100% back to normal after 2 weeks with no reoccurance. These things are common to reoccur after it happens once. It's a bit different with cats as far as the cause (usually diet related, I chocked mine up to the crappy grocery store treats the dh was giving him all the time). I'd go back to your vet to have him checked since reoccurance is very possible and it's also possible (although if the vet is a good one, I doubt it)that he didn't get them all. I used to be a tech and I've assisted on this surgery many times. It's very delicate and tricky. The other possibility is that he got a UTI from the surgery, but if you gave antibiotics afterwards, it's probably not that, although it is possible. The straining to BM is interesting though, if he was on antibiotics or is on a rx diet, he could just be a little constipated from that. A trip back to the vet is in order incase it is a reoccurance. I'd say after 7 weeks he should be back to normal.

| Hopefully Kellie sees this because I think she has had experience with it. But aren't they supposed to xray post surgery to make sure they got all the stones? Did that happen? Is he on rx food now? There is something wrong. I would take him to see the surgeon immediately.

| As to Pashas woes, The vet has taken exrays and ultrasound at least 4 times post op. The have also flushed him out at least 4 times. My vet has consulted with to other vets and has a call in to yet another surgeon. As I said I am taking him back to the vet Fri. to have his prostate checked and more flushing and ultrasound. This has really been an emotional time for both of us. He is totally normal in every other way. Eats better than ever now that he is on Royal Canin SO, he loves it. It is just so sad to see him going through this. I have read that though rarely the inner sutures in the bladder could be bothering him if they have not yet dissolved. There are so many things it could be that it is driving me not to mention HIM crazy. Thank you all for your input, that's what Pasha and I need right is information and support. I wish it was me instead of him. Thanks again |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | I'm sorry Pasha is having such a hard time after surgery. Was there anything unusual noted by the vet during the surgery? did Pasha just have a normal cystotomy done (bladder opened, stones scooped out, bladder closed)? In any of the x-rays did the vet do a dye study to see if there was something blocking the usual flow of urine? Is Pasha neutered?

| Pasha had a normal cystotomy. He was neutered as a puppy and yes the dye test was done. It is quite a mystery. Thank you for your response. |

| Friday at the vet..... Kept Pasha at the vets all day long. Two vets trying to figure out what his problem is. When the catherized him they ran into a blockage, so they filled his bladder with saline and did an ultrasound-no bladder showed up. The did an exray-no bladder showed up. They could not find his bladder. They have partially decided that his bladder has turned and is blocking part of his uretha. They have called on an expert to find his bladder. She is a top of the line specialist that performs and reads ultrasounds and exrays. Is this wierd or what? Pasha will go in Monday and she well redo all the tests and find where his bladder is hiding. Bottom line is he will probably need another surgery.Wish us luck! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | did they redo the dye test when they couldn't find the bladder? i fear they may have punctured it or it "sprung a leak" and is leaking into the abdominal cavity. is he showing any other signs of being sick or weak? if they did a dye test they would be able to see exactly where the bladder is or isn't and where the liquid is going.

| Cody had 4 stones removed...the only problem afterward was he was peeing too much, and all over the place....supposedly the special food he is on is of high moisture content, which contributes to the problem....he also didn't poop for 3 days till his system adjusted to the new diet...it has been 3 months now, we should get him back to the vet for an x-ray, or testing to make sure he's clear....he's somewhat back on his going out scedule, but every once in a while, has to go out just one more time. Good luck with your follow up, and let us know how it turns out. |

| allergic to bladder stitches Update on Pasha. They found his bladder and it is right where it's supposed to be, however he was allergic to the sutures inside the bladder which caused bacteria go grow and produce a HUGE granuloma. It is half the size of his bladder! At least the specialist gave us an answer. Unfortunatly, he will probably have you have surgery to remove it, but they are going to give it a little more to hopefully dissolve. Thank all of you for your sugestions. |
