| 4 month old Yorkie Poo very sick I bought my 4 month old Yorkie Poo yesterday from a breeder who gave him a shot called galaxy5 it's an all in one vaccine for puppies. He was fine all the way home. We got Chewbacca(chewy) for short in the house and he started vomiting all over the place and having seizures i called the vet and he told me to give him childrens benadryl, pepto and pedialyte which i did. Then today i took him to the vet because he would not eat and had no energy but still having seziures. They checked him over gave him a vitamin and antibiodic shot. Said his sugar level was great, No parvo, No heartworms. The vet said he was healthy in everyway we took him back home and have fed him babyfood and keep giving him the pedialyte. His not vomiting anymore but still tired and having sezures. We don't know what else to do i am out of money spent my whole check buying chewy then the vet visit. I love this little guy he picked me and i don't want to lose him. Just out of options on what to do for him now. |

| I'm so sorry the Chewy isn't well. Did the vet give him a shot for the seizures? I think, that sometimes they give dogs Valium when they have alot of seizures. Please call the vet back and ask if they can give him some medication for the seizures. Sending prayers your way! |

| Sending prayers for you and Chewy. Have you spoken with the breeder? Ask them if any of the other puppies had reactions to the shot and what they did. I am so sorry. I hope other more knowledgeable people can help you.

| So sorry this has happened to your pup... your vet is the only one that can help with getting the seizures under control... and I would definitely get the breeder involved. Did you get a health guarantee with him? There may be specific puppy lemon laws in your state, usually make the breeder financially responsible for his health care. Have you looked into getting a CareCredit card? Good way to help pay for vet bills...

| please check with the vet seizures are not normal. They need to be on meds to control the seizure itself could cause severe damage. They should give you prednesone and valium until they can get them under control good luck to you and your baby. Last edited by wiggles moma; 04-01-2011 at 08:12 PM. |

| A four month old Yorkie having seizures and no hypoglycemia is very concerning. There is a list of things this could be all of which require vet attention. Your pup needs a second opinion. They will likely start with blood work. If you can't get in to see someone else today, then IMO it is best for the pup to go to the ER of a specialty hospital to get this diagnosed. There is just no way to know if this is a mild issue or something very dangerous without testing. Have you looked into Care Credit? I'm very sorry about your pup.

| Have you contacted your breeder? Since this happened right after you bought Chewy and she was the one who gave him the vaccine, she should be responsible for complications/vet bills. Did she actually just vaccinate him, then hand him over? |

We just gave him the antibiodics and baby food and pedialyte and watched him and it was like a miracle. Thanks everyone for all your replys. |

If you happen to change vets any time during his lifetime, please make them aware that this occurred, as even some antibiotics may pose a threat to his health. I am very glad he was able to pull through this....

| That is what I was thinking. Something in the vaccine gave him a terrible reaction. Be sure to contact the breeder and get the right information on that vaccine. I hope he will continue to be ok. but those seizure's had to be very scary. Glad your new baby is ok now. But I still would try to find out everything about the vaccine the breeder gave the pup. Sounds like it was very potent.

| Max Small dogs shouldn't have all of their vaccinations at one time! for this very possible occurrence. Your breeder should have known this. I would definitely ask them to help with the financial reimbursement. |

YT 2000 Club Member | Dog I would be very cautious with vaccines. I bet that triggered those seizures. I am so thankful your sweet Yorkie is better. It scared me to read about what happened but a happy outcome. |

My middle child, who is now 14 years old was born early, just like my oldest. due to PPROM. He was healthy at birth, scored well on his APGARS, Everything was great. He got his Hep Dose, and the first of what was a nightmare happened each time he got his shots. He had his first seizure in my husband's arms only days after we brought him home. He spent three weeks in NICU, where he almost went back to-each time after his vaccinations at 8 weeks, and again at four months, all for grand mal seizures. The third dose was multiple ones. While I was starting to get very suspicious. I let my very level headed husband talk me out of that gut instinct I had that it was the shots, so I allowed it once more. before I said no more of this, and stopped them, until we transferred to a different pediatrician, where he administered another vaccine, protesting when I flatly refused to catch him up on the shots he was behind on. He was in the hospital for TWO MONTHS. He spent his first birthday in that hospital. RSV, they said. Yes, I can see that, but it's strange, isn't it, that his shot was in the center of all of this? Grand mal seizures, again, which they attributed to a Febrile seizure- despite vitals not showing a high fever at any point- even when this so called explanation was given. Then was the job change, the move from Phoenix to the city we are now, and a new doctor. Who took full advantage of the fact I was out of town to catch my son up on a year and a half of shots. Talked my poor husband into it, who feels guilty and sick to this day. blames himself. I came home a week later, and he was the way he is right now. I'm telling you all of this because Shots can cause seizures, and it states on vaccine information. It's why Chewie is given a dose of benadryl each time she's vaccinated. No reaction, just because I know what can happen. I know this post was long, but I've spoken to a friend of mine from childhood that is a vet tech and she told me everything that could happen, what they could do for Chewie, and everything I needed when HER first vet gave her the all in one booster and rabies shot. Be careful, ask for benadryl, and don't be afraid to ask if there is anything they can do for her with these bad reactions. Ask for extra observation if you want. These yorkies (or yorkie mixes) fully encase our hearts in their tiny paws. My Chewie IS one of my children, and remember, you pay these vets. Being educated is the first step in feeling stable about this, and knowing more to help your Chewy. I hope everything is okay, but please know, that this can definitely happen, and to take a deep breath..try not to stress. I know that's very hard right now. Do NOT let them do all of the vaccines at once!!! Ever again! Any vet worth a hill of beans would KNOW that it's dangerous. | |
