| Vet Question I took Herc to the vet for his 12 week shots today (I cried when they stuck him) and he wants to do another fecal test and Pyrantel. He just had these done on 2/18 and I guess I was under the impression that these only need to be done once a year. How often do these need to be done. Is it a monthly thing? I just don't want him to be put through unnecessary testing as well as not wanting to be charged for tests that he doesn't need. The vet that did the tests in Feb. isn't the same vet that I use. It was the breeders vet. I thought that maybe he didn't trust their tests and wanted to just do it himself. I don't know what to think. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

| For a first time wellness check when you bring home a new pup, a fecal doesn't surprise me. Our vet did the same and I think it is a good idea for you, the new caretaker to confirm that everything is okay. Not sure about the Pyrantel.

| A few breeders don't deworm unless they see worms. Most vets run several fecals on puppies and medicate no matter the results. Both groups have their reasoning. Really up to you what you want to do... At the very least I would be rerunning the test.

| I vote do the fecal...it's necessicary. Sounds like the vet likes to do a auto-de-worming...IMHO. I don't believe in it, but that's personal, I don't believe in the over use of antibiotics either...personally I used Panacur. (supposedly safer I was told-so ask your vet about it)..when I had to de-worm a dog who came with worms. One of my dogs came with Albanon (an antibiotic for cocidia) the vet said DO NOT GIVE IT AUTO LET'S TEst for it then treat not blindly treat... My vet doesn't like auto-de-worming or over-usage of drugs either...it may be a matter of perspectives on splitting hairs in procedure and protocols of "safety" 1. Ask why and see if it's because of an auto method or something else-just be sure you discuss it, understand it and then make an educated choice in what's best and safest for your pup. 2. Pleas be sure to ask about starting a heart worm med that treats to prevent all 4 types of common worms, like Interceptor or Iverheart Plus. Then you don't have to de-worm once a year-which is subjective as many vets say do the fecal if it's negative don't over treat other vets say auto-de-worm... 3. Do the fecal at least yearly-it can show a lot...more than worms and is important. Did your pup come with worms?

| From what I know as a novice (please research and look up everything yourself and talk to your vet) who reads too much and goes into the vets with a list of questions from research. Heart worm meds I give mine monthly Worming are yearly not monthly-that's dangerous. However if you give a heart worm med that prevents the common types of worms, you only need to do a fecal yearly and then treat as needed...some vets may say de-worm yearly. If your pup came with worms this changes it all and your vet is basing it on a positive worm result prior.

| Fecals cost like $10 and are really needed...you did your pup check immediately after getting pup-right with your vet-not sure why they didn't have you bring a "fecal specimen" with you...its pretty standard. It's the auto-de-worming that varies in opinion of vets...and concerned furkid Mom +Dads LOL! Quote:
