| Depends on the pup and the drugs used. Hours to days.. But what do you mean by unresponsive? Unable to move? If you just mean extremely sleepy and lethargic, that is normal.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Usually by the next day they are feeling better and then after that it is hard to keep them down. If he seems unusually lethargic I would call your vet. Hopefully by morning he will be feeling better.

Yorkie Yakker | he is extremely sleepy and lethargic --- he has never been this way before and how long after surgery should it last? I know he wont be perky - but his surgery was more then 12 hours ago. Am I expecting too much - I have all the signs to look for 0 I just hate him being this way! |

| I would call a vet or just take him in. That seems to long to be unresponsive.

| It can last hours to days. As long as the incision site looks good and his gums are pink and wet, it shouldn't be a problem. If it has been more than a couple days, I'd start to be pretty concerned. You can always call the vet to get some reassurance. Some of the injectable anesthetics used can cause this. And the pain meds... Some will be out of it the entire time they are on pain meds depending on which ones given. They shouldn't be out of it for several days from anesthesia though. If he is truly unresponsive (not responding to stimuli), then that would be an emergency. If you rub him or talk to him, etc. and he moves a bit, then that's normal..

Yorkie Yakker | I'm just a worry wart - he is up, eating and drinking, even went in to see the puppies and gave me a kiss - so I will just continue to watch. It's been a long ime since I had a pet neutered. |

| Glad to hear your puppy is doing well. Everybody worries about their puppies when they go for surgery. All dogs are different Zach was up and about a couple of hours after he was neutered, Zoe slept for 24 hours after she was spayed. My two bassets fell all over each other because they came home too soon but were fine after a few hours. |

| I'm a bit late seeing this... Seriously, no dog should be released from the vet's till they're up and walking around. If they go home early, they should be put on a heating pad (on 'Low' setting), and try to wake them up and help them up and offer a very small amout of water and food. Give them a chance to urinate. Then, if they are not up allow them to sleep another hour, then try again, and keep trying till they can get up on their own. Monitor them closely until they are up and about, and no longer woosie. They may not be 100%, but they should be functional. Offer very small amounts of food and water every 1/2 - 1 hour until they are satiated. If they down a bowl of water after fasting and surgery, they could become sick and aspirate on the vomit. Very glad your dog made it through...
