Carson has Necrotizing Encephalitis - Help! - YorkieTalk.com Forums

He had a MRI today and the Neurologist called to say she believes he has Necrotizing Encephalitis - it will be confirmed once the report is back from the lab. However, she had looked at the MRI data.

Does anyone have advise they could share, it seems like its going to be a long road of harsh medications. And he may only live weeks or months, there is a chance he can live a long normal live (I'm praying for that option).

I believe that LadyJane may be able to give you information for a GME support group - I think (and I'm not 100% sure) that GME is a form of NE.... If that is the case, the protocol developed by Dr. Allen Sisson of the MSPCA Angell-Memorial Hospital in Boston is often followed. I don't know what that is but I have read about it here. Prayers for your little Carson.

We actually have the report from DR Allen Sisson, so that is good news. Our breeder gave it to us when we didn't know what could be the problem. I going to make a copy for the Neurologist the next time I see her.

I am so sorry about Carson's diagnosis.

North Carolina State Vet School has been doing quite a it of research on encephalitis. There is lot of information on their website:

Have your vet contact him...he's developed the most successful protocol for treatment.. He does phone consultations...

They can give your more info on treatment, and how to contact Dr Sisson. Don't lose hope. Keeping you and Carson in my prayers... If you need any help, let me know. Hugs.... Please get him on the right meds asap....

Thank you, we'll make a copy for her to contact him. She said that from what she saw on the MRI (how bad it was) she was surprised Carson wasn't worse off physically. I'm out for the day - we are getting my mom's house ready to be put up for sale on Tuesday. My neighbour is babysitting Carson and Chloe, so he will be watched carefully.

I see that others have given you links where you can find more information. Just wanted to share one of YHR's fosters with you. Little Roriee came to us in terrible shape from GME and is a little miracle now after having undergone chemotherapy. You can see her story at: Adoptable Pups

Ladyjane - thank you for posting the link for Roriee, what an amazing story. And you are an amazing person for not giving up on this adorable little girl.

I am hopeful for Carson, I just wish we were 5-7 days from now - so he could start to feel better from the Prednisone.

Tuesday he will get the blood tider (not sure if that is how you spell it) done, and then we can start on the Lomustine. I believe this is what the Neurologist is suggesting, I do know she mentioned something that would happen every 4 weeks - so I guess that was it.

I'm also going to check on the diet they mention in Dr Sisson's report - RD, however, I will probably figure out how to do it in a homecooked way.
