| New Puppy - Diarrhea and limping :( Hi all, my little 9 week old Yorkie is having some issues. We got her last week and she was doing OK but the last 4 days she has had bad diarrhea. We feel SO bad for her. She will wait and not eat all day, then she will eat and we feel good, but then she will have such a hard time going poo. At first we were trying to potty train her but now we just feel so bad for her that anytime she actually goes we will try and support her and make her feel good about it. The bad thing is, it is always liquidy. And she tries so hard to go but not much comes out. It is going on 4 days of this. Should we be scared? My wife and I plan to take her to the Vet tomorrow. Any advice? Please... To make matters worse, today when she was playing she must have hurt her leg. She is limping and it breaks my heart. She doesnt seem to be in any pain, but it is very noticable that she is hurting by the way she walks and how she favors her other leg. One last question. Is it normal for a little puppy to seem depressed at times? She is so cute and loving but at time she just seems so down. Is this normal at her age? I apologize for all the questions, but we are new parents and we love her SO much. Any advice is helpful. thank you all so much... |

| Wow...that's a lot of questions! Nine weeks is very young for a puppy to not be with its mother. Please DO take her to a vet tomorrow! I don't have any suggestions.....she needs to be seen by a vet for sure! Please post when you return from the vet and let us know what they said!

| I would deffinatly go to the vet and get some test done. Alice was having yellow / green colored diarrhea when we got her. it was liquid ish and she was having a hard time going to the bathroom as well. also the depression doesnt sound good. for us it turned out to be giardia and coccidia. a simple test from your vet can tell you what the problem is. does it seem like shes loosing weight? my girl went from 2.4 lbs to 2 lbs in about a week. paracites are pretty easy to treat but the sooner you find out whats wrong the better. who knows it could be nothing? but its better to be safe then sorry i suppose.

| Diarrhea for 4 days isn't good. It can be a number of things including even Giardia or she can just be constipated by the food you are feeding her. Are you feeding her a different food - have you changed her food at all recently? Little ones can also be picky eaters and some prefer to eat at night. I'm glad you taking her to the Vet tomorrow - very important that she's seen. 9 weeks is very young for a puppy not to be with her mother too. I'd pick up some canned plain pumpkin to have which helps with diarrhea and constipation, but she does need to be seen by a vet as soon as possible to rule out anything serious and to have her leg looked at. She could be dehydrated as well and cramping up in her legs. Is she drinking water okay at all? Please let us know how the appt. goes tomorrow. Good luck.

| Have you called the breeder of the pup? Did you receive a good guarantee with your puppy? I'd say it sounds like you have two possibly serious problems to deal with. First I'd get a stool sample into the vet as there's a good chance the pup has parasites. You sometimes have to do more than one check to detect giardia or coccidiosis and they are both very common in puppies. The limping may be cause by luxating patella or loose knee caps. If a pup is limping at 9 weeks because of knees the patellas must be very loose. Did you take the pup in for a well puppy check up when you got her? Depending on the causes of these problems you may want to return the puppy if you can get a full refund. Otherwise you may be in for high vet bills down the road. |
