| Toenail bleeding and hanging out from Paw Last night Winnie and I were chasing each other around the house. She was running and her toenail got caught in the air register. I don't think I noticed it until a few minutes later when I saw blood all over the floor. Then we stopped and she went and hid and I saw her holding up her paw at me and I was trying to get her to come to me but she still thought we were playing around. Finally I was able to get a hold of her and when I took her into the bathroom to look at it I noticed her toenail was half way up in the hair and kind of hanging there. I tried moving it and it's still attached. She was not crying or anything and was walking fine. She just kept licking it and licking it. I held a towel to it and tried calling my vet which said that there wasn't much that she could say over the phone unless I wanted to bring her in but it could wait until Monday. To save me a large vet bill I have decided to wait until Monday. Today I noticed she is moping around being lazy and doesn't want to play really. She is still licking it once in a while but noticed she tucks the foot under whenever she is laying around. I keep putting it under water and have cleaned it a little bit with some peroxcide. Just wondering if there are any comments or any thing I should be concerned about. She's only 6 months and I am sad that this had to happen to her. I don't want her to get an infection or anything. I don't know if I should be worried or not? Thanks to anyone that responds! Maggie & Winnie |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Does it still bleed at all? How close to the nail bed is the break? Can it be easily clipped off with nail clippers? sometimes the vet will just clip off the broken part and then wrap the paw up to protect it for a few days.

| Thanks for your reply. Winnie did not break the nail, the nail some how pulled out from the pad. It's pointing upwards and you can see how it has come away from the pad. She is now sort of limping. I keep telling myself that if my nail ripped off a bit that I would be hurting a little bit too. I just don't want an infection. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | sounds like the whole nail needs to be removed then. If your going to wait until tomorrow to take her in then make sure the area is kept clean and dry. hydrogen peroxide really doesn't clean or disinfect so you can just use warm soapy water. i just use peroxide to clean off blood. i don't blame her for limping. that's gotta hurt

| I forgot to respond.... I took Winnie into the vet and she just said that it looks like it's fine and it might fall off. Winnie limped on it for a few days but now she is back to normal. I look at it and it's all healed up. I don't think it will fall off even. It was just me over reacting for my little furbutt. Thanks all for the replys! |
