| spider bite and maybe more Hi Everyone! I am new to this site and new as a Yorkie mommy! My 15 month old Yorkie is on antibiotics and painkillers for what the vet things is a spider bite! Poor baby is not well, but eating, etc. However, I am very concerned because I wonder if this is secondary to something else. For about a week Sunny would, once and awhile, act like something was "getting her" by looking at her backside, licking toward her hip, etc. I checked her over constantly, found nothing. She was running and playing. All was well, until 2 days ago I saw what I thought may be ringworm and immediately took her to the vet. No ringworm, but an infection. They shaved her leg so I can apply a lotion (stopped after 2 times as it was burning her), and gave her antibiotics. Yesterday morning Sunny was trhowing herself on the ground in pain, I took her back and now she is on pain killers and the antibiotics seem to be working. She is licking at site, but still will run likesomething is getting her when she has to walk. Can anyone help me with what I should discuss with the vet. I called and made a follow up appointment for monday AM Thanks! |

| They gave her V.A.L. syrup with torugesic. I am making sure I push loads of water to keep those little kidneys going. |

| Doesn't hurt to get a second opinion! How long have you been with this vet, other pets previously seen? Just thinking that if your gut tells you there is more too it or something you shouldn't ignore that. Get another opinion from a reputable vet in your area. A few years ago we took our toy fox terrier to the vet as she was sick and failing rapidly and the vet we went to was new to the practice, he couldn't diagnose was just giving us "band-aid" type fixes. We knew there was more and she was going down hill rapidly so we went to another recommended vet and she was diagnosed with Addison's disease. It is hard to diagnose and we were fortunate...my point is I felt that we weren't getting to the real problem and he couldn't figure it out and rather than saying so was "troubleshooting". Research for yourself possibilities online that you could suggest if you are confident in your current vet but if you aren't, go to another vet! Good Luck |

| I agree with the others. If you feel there is something more going on I would get a second opinion. I'm not saying your vet isn't good, but we are all human. Do you have a soft e collar to put on the lil one so they won't lick the area?

| I am so sorry your little one is suffering. I will keep you both in my thoughts. I agree that you might need to see a different vet. Some people just can't admit that something is beyond them. Maybe this is the case here. Thinking of you and wishing for better days ahead.

The lotion is antibacterial or something? I am thinking she could benefit from a soft collar too. At least she would keep the lotion on. poor kid. hope she is responding to t he medication, if not..i agree with a second opinion. Good luck | |

| Thank you everyone! What a great site! Sunny is looking better and she even jumped off the couch to greet me a couple of minutes ago! Her leg is not as red and the "bite" area looks better. She is very hungry and I am glad to see her eat like a little horse! Taking her back Monday am to have the vet check her again....he wanted to keep a close watch. She is still favoring that leg and it almost looks like burned skin (looks so painful) I don't know how she may have burned it, if it is that, because I never let her out alone to potty and she is at my side all the time. No lamps on the floor, I keep her away from the stove etc......very strange! But incests can do that...just wish I knew for sure when and how!!! |

| Had she been to the groomers lately? Any problems with her anal glands?

| Went to the Vet again today for Sunny...Leg is still infected after only 5 days on antibiotics....saw another vet, who also agrees this is a spider bite and quite severe....He pointed out the depth and length of the infection, which is visible to the human eye....they will keep her antibiotics until next Monday, when they will reevaluate...he gave another lotion to help soothe the skin, which is stretched from infective swelling....Sunny must wear a collar and he suggested the soft donut type...which I bought immediately....She is still on pain killers. The vet pointed out how very painful this is for her..... Poor baby....my goodness, what a terrible thing for her to go through....she looks better, but that leg looks so bad! |

| Recently a friend send me a picture of her dog with a red swollen thing on her neck, vet was not sure if it was a spider bite. I pm a breeder here and she said she had one of her dogs bitten by a spider once and the only way the vet knew for sure is by doing a blood test the venom showed up and they had to give him an anti-venom shot and was send home with antibiotic. If the dog is not treated correctly the venom can cause damage to the major organs. Please keep us updated on your little guy and I hope he gets well very soon.
