Mack has not eaten a meal since Saturday morning (usually eats royal canin for small dogs) He is 11 months old and very active, but since Saturday, he vomits often, when he goes outside to potty, he will eat grass, then come in and vomit. He will drink very little water. I've been giving him nutri-cal since he is not eating. Took him to the vet this morning and he tells me that he does not have a blockage or anything serious and it may be that his esophogas is irritated from the vomitting and he won't eat because his throat hurts. No duh . . . poor guy is pathetic and lays around and sleeps all day. The vet gave hima a shot of daphenydrmine and a dose of carafate to coat his throat and stomach from irritation. I am supposed to give him an antibiotic twice a day and children's antihistimine every 6 hours. Has anyone had this happen before? How long til Mack feels good enough to eat. I'm worried sick, I can't stand for something to happen to him. Thanks for any information.

Bumping this. Hope Mack is feeling better very soon. Guess if he isn't feeling be I'd be looking for another vet for a second opinion. Poor baby. ~Joanne~

I have no advice to give. Hopefully someone will come along. I do agree with 4dogmamma, if you feel she doesn't seem to be getting any better I would seek another opinion. Did the vet run any kind of test? Hopefully Mack will start feeling better. Poor thing

He's feeling a little better this evening. He's trying to play with the cat and barking at me which is so much better than lying around sleeping. I'll keep you posted! Thanks for the support.

Did the vet run bloodwork - specifically a chem 27 panel to check levels of Lipase and Amalyse, among other things? If not, I would highly recommend this be done asap as it will help the diagnostic process.

Bailey had similar symptoms last summer. After blockage was ruled out, the vet did blood tests and found pancreatis. Its only happened the one time.

I learned not to feed a vomiting dog; let the tummy recover. After a 24 hour tummy rest, reintroduce bland low-fat food in very small quantities.

Sadie's going through something kinda like this now. she was vomitting and having loose stools along with no appetitie whatsoever. hers is just gastroenteritis and will resolve with meds and with time. rest the tummy at least 12-24 hours. antibiotics can help. cerenia is great for anti vomitting and try a little pepcid 10mg. for a 5.5 lb dog they said to give 1/4 of a 10mg tablet of pepcid for her stomach acid to chill out...now her appetite is back and she's feeling spunky again.

When was his last stool and what was the consistency? Mucousy, runny...Is his tummy making any noises, etc?

As someone else suggested, your vet needs to do some blood work if not done already to help rule out serious digestive problems (i.e. pancreatitis). I am concerned that your dog is not eating. Did the vet give you any suggestions on what to feed (e.g. small bland meals)? These little babies can go downhill very fast and dehydrate very fast so it is important that you keep in touch with your vet to see if subcutaneous fluids need to be given if your dog is not eating and is vomiting.

Mack is sloop much better this morning. Last night he was interested in a small amount of hard boiled egg as the vet said protien was very important. He ate a couple very small treats. This morning he woke me at 2 to go potty and was up and at it at 6:30 am like usual and ate a small amount of nibble a water. He's back to normal I think. I'm going to keep a close eye on him and suggest the blood work if it should happen again. Thanks to all your support. I knew I could count on yorkietalk!!! Everyone have a great day

Hope Mack is feeling better. Harley has just gone through a similar problem. He was eating grass, vomitting, and not eating or drinking much. The vet did blood work and said it was pancreatitis. So he has antibiotics and eating a bland diet. No fats - that is the biggest thing I learned from this experience!
