| Prince is taking 1/4 aminophylline every morning and 1/4 torbutrol every night. He also used Temaril P as needed. I was paying $20.00 for five aminophylline pills. I had asked his vet several times if they had a maintenence rate, but it was basically the same, even in bulk. While the vet was on vaction, I called in for a refill, and asked the vet tec about a better price since Prince will need this for the rest of his life, she put me on hold, came back and told me that I could buy 100 pills for $35.00. Why wasn't I told this before!!!! The vet and I will have a little chat when he gets back!!!! I'm not sure how much I pay for the torbutrol, but will try to get that in bulk as well. I'll let you know when I get a refill in a few days. Prince doesn't cough, so I don't need meds for that. The only time Prince needs oxygen is after he gets his nail cut. He gets so worked up over that, even with Rescue Remedy. It's so sad.

Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | Paris never had it either. He is 10 1/2! He did have bladder stone surgery several months before this appeared. I no longer go to that vet though. He is now facing charges for overdosing a clients dog who died. Maybe the surgery had something to do with him getting it?! |

Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | Well I must say time flies. Paris' bladder stone surgery was 9/8/2009 and he started coughing 5/2010 so it was 8 months later he developed CT. Does that make any sence? |

| Sounds pretty expensive for those meds. I used the liquid of both meds and never paid that much!

| Yes, my vet sells it. Ask your vet about it. They put it in pet tinic which is a vitamin supplement. The dogs actually like it.

| How can I get Prince's vet to prescribe Lomotil if he is not familiar with using it for CT?

| i had a dog with ct,, i had just about every medicine for him under the sun that anyone anywhere said might or did work,,We battles for about 2 years, mostly good times but he needed to be put to sleep in june. i never heard of hycoden in a pill,,, its a cough syrup,,, you can ask your vet to write a scrript and get it filled at your local cvs or any pharmacy,it might be cheaper than your vet, same with the pred if your dog takes it and if he she has ct the chances they will take pred at some point is pretty high,, its on the walmart 4.00 list, i always got the 5mg for fife and cut them to the correct dose. I used marax for a time, hard to find but it worked. In my experience with fife its trial and error see what works and how much of it. As far as after the surgery your dog was diagnosed with CT that is not uncommon and usually has nothing to do with the vet,, when your dog is put under they need to put a tube down throat this often makes a BAD trachea worse,, or a ct that was starting to have problems but never manifested often does after a surgery. The anti diarrhea med works in the same waythe hycoden they both have codeine in it,,,, a cough medicine with codeine causes constipation |

Your post was very informative, but regarding being diagnosed with CT at surgery, Prince had xrays and all of the pre-op procedures done, and his trachea was fine. In his case, I feel it has everything to do with the vet.

| Yes, but some vets have found it effective for treating CT. Apparently it is still in the experimental stage, but those who use it are really happy with it. LadyJane uses it for her yorkies and has tons of info.

I am not sure why it works, but it does! My guess is that it is because it has an opiate in it. If your vet is not familiar with it, tell him to read his Kirk's Veterinary Therapy book! It is in there. My vet does a lot of reading and also consults bi-weekly with the specialists in this area (they all meet and discuss cases and treatments) and is really up to date on a lot of things!
