| Any Advice would be appreciated! Hello! I was hoping someone in this forum could help me. I have a 16 week old yorkie puppy. I've had him for 8 weeks. The beginning was very hard, he got sick a lot but he has been healthy for a couple weeks now. But I've noticed for about 4 days now that he seems to be lazy, like tired or uninterested in everything. It's hard to describe. He's eating well, poop is normal, hasn't thrown up or anything or symptom I can see. He's not lethargic like he won't move at all but he has changed. He no longer runs around like crazy and he seems to be sleeping a little more. The word I would use is probably calm. He just seems too calm. Especially when I compare to how he was 2 weeks ago. He would run like crazy if he was allowed all around the house, he would jump up and down when someone got home. He also is no longer very interested in being carried. I was trying to research information on stages of development and I read something that they go through a fear stage at 4 months. Could anyone tell me exactly what should be expected in this stage? I thought about taking him to the vet but I know they will likely not be able to tell me anything just from looking at him and would probably just have a bunch of tests done on him. I am tight on money so I only want to take him if it's necessary and not if this is normal behavior. I've never had a puppy before so I honestly have no idea what to expect. I figure maybe he's growing up and become more independent but I really don't know. I know there's a lot of people with a lot of experience on this site so I wanted to hear input as to what could be the reason for this change in my puppy. Thank you so much for your help! Debbie |

| Hmmm, I don't know what to tell you either. My Bailey, who is just a little over a year never had a lazy or fear phase, he has been a hyper little thing since I got him. I've never really seen a puppy that hasn't been hyper/playful. I hope more experienced owners can give their thoughts.

Have you checked his gums and ears? For gums paleness, or sores, for ears, bad smell, any discharge. Has he recently had any vaccinations? Have you used any new products on your floors? What did your vet said earlier on when you took him in because he was being sick a lot?

| It could be that he is teething. or going through a growth spurt and requires more sleep. What were his issues when he was sick a lot? |

| Answer to questions Thanks so much for responding. Regarding the questions about what he had when he was sick it was several things. About 1 week after I got him, he started coughing, I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with Kennel Cough. They gave him antibiotics and some other medicine I don't recall and he got better within a couple days. He was fine for about 5 days after his recover and then one day he started throwing up, at first it seemed like his food but then he was throwing up white foam which the vet then told me was probably bile because he had nothing in his stomach. He didn't want to eat and was very dehydrated. The vet gave him medicines, a shot for the dehydration and he slowly recovered. He had also lost a lot of weight at that point. He had been at 1.8 about 5 days before and was then weighing 1.2. I was so scared, he seemed so sick and he was so tiny it was just breaking my heart. Thankfully he recovered and hasn't thrown up since. He now eats a lot better and drinks a lot of water. He was then doing well for about 3 weeks until I took him to the vet for his 3rd booster shots (I do believe that they have given him the shots too early but I didn't know this before) and they gave him the 3rd booster shots of parvo/distemper and the bordatella shot (he was 14 weeks at this point, today he is 16 weeks). This was about two weeks ago. The vet also told me that he had an ear infection. I had my doubts about this since he seemed fine and had no symptoms but the vet took some brown wax out of his ears and said it was an infection. I bought the ear cleaner and Tresaderm drops for the infection because I figured it was better safe than sorry. That day after the shot, he was very down for the rest of the night but by the following day he was perfectly normal. He then was totally normal for a week. It's been for a couple of days that I see this difference. It really wouldn't concern me if he had been like this from the beginning because he's not lethargic just more calm and seems more uninterested in things. Like I said he's eating well and no other symptom I can see. He is scheduled for his final set of parvo/distemper next weekend (he'll be 17 weeks then). Do you guys give your yorkies the bordatella vaccine? He got one that day but I have read negative things about it and he's scheduled to get it again next weekend, would you recommend I just let him get it or refuse it? I wish I knew if his behavior is normal, maybe it's just his personality but I do worry so much all the time about him. I absolutely adore him and just want him to fine. I guess I will probably watch him for a couple more days and then decide whether to take him to the vet or not. I haven't been using any new cleaning products that I can think of. I only clean with those odor removers that I have been using from the beginning and sometimes water and vinegar. I also sometimes light scented candles in the room where he's at but I can't imagine that would affect him in any way. He has been eating the same food and I can't think of anything that is different. Please let me know if you think he really needs the vet or if it might be normal. Thank you so much for your help! | Bordatella is Kennel cough. It is no more serious than a child with a cold. The ant5ibiotics are given to prevent pneumonia, it does not cure the kennel cough. I do not get the bordatella, but my dogs are not around other dogs. sounds like the poor little guy has been through a lot. I hope he gets back to normal so you can quit worrying. |

| I wish I had some insight but just do not. Poor baby has been thru so much. I no longer get vaccines together when they are due. I always seperate out the rabies and do that a week after the others. I personally don't give bordatella either. I hope he's back to normal soon and nothing is seriously wrong with him. He sounds like he's awfully tiny. |

| I would say that lethergy and uninterested in things for four days is going to require a vet visit. That doesn't sound like normal puppy behavior to me. I'd keep a close eye on him this week-end and if he didn't perk up; be on the phone to the vet on Monday. Good luck with your baby. |

| Poor little guy. I'm so sorry he's been sick. I would take him to the Vet as soon as you could. As mentioned this isn't normal puppy behavior or a fear stage the puppy is going through (also the fear stage occurs with the socialization phase typically anywhere around 8 weeks to 3 months of age). In their 4 month of age (sometimes earlier) is when they got through their so called toddler stage. My gir is 4.5 months old and is going through this stage now herself. If your little guy has been diagnosed with KC then he can and will continue to shed the bacteria for 6 to 14 weeks. So it can still be in his system. With mild cases, dogs continue to eat and be alert and active but in more severe cases, the symptoms may progress (which could be the case here!) and include lethargy, fever, inappetence, pneumonia, and in very severe cases, even death. Do you have any idea how he contacted KC? Has he been recently at the groomers or boarded or around other dogs? I'd be very concerned since he has been diagnosed with KC - it could have progressed. Do you know the name of the antibiotics the dog was treated with?

| I'm certainly no expert. But think I wouldn't give him anymore shots until the little guy puts on some weight & starts acting better. Keep close eye on him & if anything changes you'll need to get him to vet. I do know that young pups require more sleep. Only you can determine how much sleep is "to much". Good Luck |
