Are you talking about a yorkie or a human baby? If a human, go to the hospital. You certainly need to give more details. If this is a yorkie, sounds like you need to go to a vet. Feeding with a dropper? Does not sound right to me.

| I had to feed Livi's puppies with an eye dropper so I understand the time and effort that goes into it. Are you diapering the puppy before feeding it? Are you burping it after you drop the milk? I never had a lot of success with the burping, but I still tried. How much are you dropping each time and how often? Tammy Last edited by TammyJM; 03-28-2010 at 05:28 AM. |

| Shows how much I know. But...what is a preemie? Is this a puppy that has been taken from it's mother too soon? The word preemie to me means early birth of a human baby.

Good luck to the OP...I know how much time and energy goes into dropping food to these little ones!

| A link I just found. I don't know the source, but it looks pretty thorough and informative. Note that it says if a puppy is crying a lot, it is hungry or in distress! How To Care for the Premature Puppy - by Roberta Jamieson

| Nightmare scenario--- I lost an entire litter a couple of months ago due to premature c-section that taught me a lot about how little most vets know about reproduction. Saving this puppy is a long shot, IMO, but you have to start by keeping her very warm---rig up an incubator and keep it at 100 degrees. Don't feed milk or milk replacer as it's too rich for this preemie digestive system. Use sugar water to keep hydrated only for now. Surely someone will come on here with more info. |

| If you mean baby puppies have you made sure they are pooping by gently rubbing a damp cloth over the rectum? This simulates what the mother does to get them to eliminate.

It's good that she's made it this far but newborns have a VERY delicate digestive system. I've hand fed babies before and I always use canned goat's milk (diluted w/ equal parts water and add a little karo to it. I wouldn't recommend any of the commercial milk replacements. The eye dropper is a good method but you have to feed by the drop. They can easily aspirate the formula if fed too fast.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I think my girl was a preemie..although she weighed 3 ounces she was just skin and bones. Her hair was different from the other 2. She didn't have the tan areas like the other it was just black skin. I didn't have any luck with the dropper. She had no suck reflexes and I was drowning her. I ended up tube feeding her. Make sure your diapering her after you feed her. You can save this baby. I suggest taking her in to the vet and getting some advice. After about 5 days mine started getting her hair like the others and the suckle reflex started kicking in. When she started sucking I would pull the others off and let her nurse by herself until full then let the bigger ones have it. I would do this every 2 hours. She is now finding it herself but I still go and let her nurse alone often.

Also for gas you can use the baby gas relief drops but just use a tiny drop.
