LP Surgery on 08/17

It is very stressful as the day for Prince's surgery is approaching. I spoke to his surgeon, he assured everything will be alright. I am hoping too. I was told that he might prescribe Hydromorphone post surgery. I know the side effects in humans. Has anyone else used it??

Please say a prayre for Princi for a speedy recovery and I will for all the "man's Best Friend" that have to go thru any kind of pain.

The Emergency Vet gave Sadie hydromorphone when we went in for her knee the first time. Sadie is allergic to EVERYTHING so of course she had a reaction to the shot. After her bilateral LP surgery 6 weeks ago she was only given Metacam afterwards. You might want to ask if they have to give Prince hydromorphone or if they can control his pain on Metacam. She was able to tolerate the Metacam and only needed it for a week post surgery.

Thank you for the prayers and info. Also, can some one help me with some info on Anaesthetic used for the LP surgery. Was it an IV or a gas. I believe gas anaesthetics have longer recovery time and more side effects.

Also could you please tell me how your yorkie felt after surgery? Princi is a JACK RUSSEL in yorkie skin. Anything less than his hyperness bothers me. if I know what to expect, I will not freak out.

Hydro is a pain medications that i've given sub-q and IV while i worked as a vet tech. Hydro, mixed with two other meds, was the standard pre-medication used to sedate the dogs before inducing anesthesia before surgery. It was also given as a pain management drug for dogs in a lot of pain. It DOES make them vomit every time its given, unless the dog is in a lot of pain. It also will make them very drowsy and sedate, which i think would be very worrisome for owners at home.

As far as anesthesia goes, after the pre-med is given a catheter should be placed and the dog should be induced with an IV drug. This drug sedates them even more so that an endotracheal tube can be placed and they can be hooked up to gas anesthesia. Iso and Sevo are the safest ones to use and they leave the system very quickly after they are taken off of it.

Sadie stayed at the hospital for two nights after surgery. I didn't see her during this time because the vet thought it would be worse on her if I came and did not take her home with me. When I brought her home Day 3 Sadie was very lethargic but this was a blessing due to her having to be contained in a crate for 6 weeks. I set up crates all around the house and moved her from room to room with me so she wouldn't feel left out. Good Luck today!

Price had a successful surgery . He is still with the VET. I will bring him tommorrow. It was a long last night preparing for his surgery. Tonight will be longer. They had to deepen the groove, tighten the ligaments and put apin.

I was told that I could give food tommorrow. Can I give Yogurt(yoghund). He likes slices of turkey. CAn I give him that. Also his daily routine has Blueberries and Peanut butter.

Also please help me how to take him for his daily routines

I am so glad Prince's surgery was a success! Your vet will probably give you a list of Do's and Don'ts for Prince during recovery time. My surgeon was very strict and Sadie did not have any activity for 6 LONG weeks! Other vets start to include exercise much earlier but Sadie was confined to a crate or my lap at all times. I kept Sadie on her regular food routine during recovery and made sure not to introduce anything new. She was on Metamucil once a day to keep her bowels regular and easy since she couldn't get in her "normal" stance since both legs were hurt. The vet did encourage me to cut back on treats so she would not gain weight. If they gain weight it can be worse on their knees when they get back to full activity. Just seeing this. I am glad that Prince's surgery went well. Having been through it, I can appreciate what you are going thru. Hot Rod ate at first since he had to fast before his surgery but then refused food for a day or so. Vet said it was unusual but when he wasn't eating, he thought that maybe his pain meds was upsetting his tummy. He took a little time to get back to normal eating-although that is an oxy moron in itself as he's the pickiest eater there is.

We used a pad until we felt comfortable for him to be outside. I would put him on the pad and then let him figure out how he was going to stand with me ready to catch him (in case). We waiting probably a week before attempting to do his business outside and then we carried him and only put him down to do his business and carried him back in. It is so hard to see them this way but it will be so much better in the long run when you see that he will be so much better. Please feel free to pm if you have any questions! Thank you for the concern HotRod's mom.... he is doing fine. His bandage came off. Hard to see his legs with stiches. The doc asked me to completely crate him. He is walking on his leg normally while going out or inside the house.

It is almost 9 days. Do you think, I can increase his walking, couple of laps inside the house???

did your surgeon did you exercise guidelines?

i worked for a orthopedic surgeon and we gave our clients strict guidelines to abide by. so you might want to check with him.

Kalina82 makes a very good point (she's the one who helped me through alot), follow what your surgeon says. Ours told us no walking that was more than necessary. I would think that especially in the first couple of weeks that everything is healing so you don't want anything to go wrong. By the 5th week it was hard to contain Hot Rod. I always thought that he was probably healed but the extra time was precautionary. And I think the doctors have a idea that the mommies and daddies do tend to lax up towards the end so the longer they do have them off, the better the healing process. But do ask your surgeon...Stedman'smommy surgeon had her doing physical therapy on Tatum, we didn't get any instruction for it. I think that the surgeon has the best feel for it since he's the one who knows exactly what shape the knee is in.

I did however ask (in the last 2 weeks) if I could have him do water therapy. We were going to be draining the hot tub and it seemed like a natural thing. The surgeon even told us no more than 5 minutes a session with that.

And again, our surgeon said the we could put him in a 3 x 3 area. Check with him and see if that might be a possibility. This would give him a little bit of stretching room.
