| Reason why Sammy threw up Blood Quote:
What do I have to do to get him to eat? I'm back in this dilemma where if I don't feed him, he'll throw up again and get sick....and watch him suffer. But at the same time, in order to get a picky dog like Sammy to eat (or any dog as a matter of fact) I know I should starve him and take his food away after 20mins of not touching it until he gets so hungry to the point, he'll learn to love his kebble. Please anyone, any good pointers or advice?

| So glad your little guy is so much better. Sorry I don't have any advice on the food for you. I have not experienced a picky eater in a long time. My babies all love to eat. You also posted good information about what happened and why. Thanks for the information. |

| Hi, my little Lexie out of the blues started throwing up, yellow foamy stuff a while back, the next day soft stools mixed with blood, then just the d. I took her to the vet, paid quite a bit, the antibiotic she was given took care of the problem after 2 rounds of it, the vet said she may have had a bacterial infection. Probably from the flossies I had given her, which she loved but they don't love her tummy. She is a very picky eater, I was putting baby food in her dry kibble, we switched from chicken soup to california naturals, which she hated, even with the chicken baby food on it, we moved to wellness but still had to cover it with canned meat. I started giving my 3 Honest Kitchen preference formula just to see if they liked it, I have not even added the meat yet, they Love it!, it smells good, and apparently tastes good to them. When I had them on California naturals I had found that the lamb formula had some type of animal hair sticking out of the dry kibble , so I am happy to have found something where I can add the meat, I know where it came from, no by products involved, or other stuff to worry about, I cook it myself and add it to the honest kitchen preference formula. I would say give the honest kitchen a try, they will send you samples. If you want to continue with your dry kibble then adding some wet food may entice your furbaby or try the chicken baby food on the dry kibble. Good luck

| Quote: Thank you so much for the advice, I definitely need to try something different because I don't want to continue to feed him rice and chicken. Today I tried mixing his adult dry kebble along with his rice and chicken. And of course, the intelligent little guy he is, spread his food all over the floor and ate everything but the dry kebble. I want to stay away from mixing dry food along with wet canned food unless I know for sure there's no hope. The reason I say this is because I only have 1 yorkie and the part about Sammy is he'd eat it when the can is fresh (sometimes)...but even smallest Wellness Canned wet food available would last at least a week since he's such a small eater; each meal i'd only use a spoon full or two only. I would then refrigerate it in the meantime, but he knows once it's not a fresh can, he won't even touch it. And truth be told, he's gotten to the point where he wouldn't even touch a fresh Canned food. Hopeless little . I have even tried throwing in chicken into the mix as mentiioned before, he'd sometimes eat it, but most of the time he just leaves it untouch or just picks the chicken from the mix by spreading it all on the ground. I dunno what to do with this guy anymore. I'll think about entising the new Adult Wellness dry kebble with wet food, but I know once I go there, there's no turning back with this little guy. The last thing I want to end up is having to serve him a lamb chop every meal.

| Not eating could potentially lead to throwing up blood Just want to do an update on Sammy . He's been recovering and he's back to normal from having pancreatitis. The past couple of days I've been trying to switch him back to dry adult Wellness kibble from Chicken & rice . Once again, he decides to starve himself again for 1 day and a 1/2. 2 Nights ago he threw up in the middle of the night again, not only bile, but blood again . The acid in his stomach is just too much with an empty stomach. The next morning I had to feed him a 1/4 of a 10mg table of Pepcid AC to reduce his acid and have to start feeding him chicken and rice. Hopefully him throwing up blood will go away again. Apparently, not eating could potentially lead to throwing up blood.

| Hi. I am so glad your Sammy is on the road to recovery and yes your vet is right about the not eating making them sick and throw up blood. My Wee Sammie..who I lost in March at 15 years old..was also a picky eater..and he was prone also to bouts of days of not eating..then he would be sick..first bile only..then mixed with bloo..Each Vet visit they said he was just empty and dehydrated etc. He did have other problems in the end though..but with these little dogs who are fussy about ther food it can be a real problem. I do hope all goes well for your "Sammy".. Chrisann..x

This is exactally how I started home cooking for Buddy. He became sick and vet kept switching food on me and he would not eat anything so I started cooking chicken and rice, which he gobbled up. After three months of switching foods I switched vet's, the new one found the problem, corrected it and now I had a yorkie who would not eat any food only chicken and rice. So I mixed the chicken and rice with the new food, little food at a time until I had more food but still the chicken and rice. He loved it, then I took away the rice, too much fiber on a daily basis and replaced it with veggies. He has been eating this way for four years. Hope that helps you. You have to trick these stinker's at times. I cook a family size pkg of boneless chicken breasts, around 8 in a pky, every other week and freeze them. They thaw over night in the refrig so they are always at hand for his feeding. Good luck, hope this works for you.

protein in it, chicken, and is low in protein so the added chicken will not be a problem. One night last week I didn't have veggies made to add to his pm dinner and he just sat there looking at me and would not eat. He missed his veggies. LOL So I cooked up some peas and won't make that mistake again.

| So glad that Sammy is doing a little better. Here's a suggestion for the can of Wellness. I used to do this for my Buddy. As soon as you open the can, take a table spoon or however much you use and freeze it. I used the little jewelry plastic bags with the zip top. Make sure all the air is out of it, pop in the freezer until you need it. I normally would micro wave it until almost thawed. Then knead it in my fingers to finish thawing to room temp. Hope that helps |
