| Puppy with bad kidneys My six month old puppy went in to get neutured and his pre op blood work showed his bun was 38. He had blood and bacteria in his urine as well. Later his ultrasound showed his kidneys are abnormal. The vet said eventually his kidneys will fail. Does anyone know if there is something that can be done? |

| I'm sorry I don't know anything about that. Hopefully someone will come along with more advice. To me, it would certainly be worth talking with another vet if your current vet can't give you any options.

| Aww, I'm so sorry. There are great reports on Azodyl but I'm not sure it would work in this case. That BUN isn't terribly high and it he wasn't allowed water before surgery, it can be up from dehydration. Does he have an infection? Who did the ultrasound? An internist or your regular vet? Were they just small or what? Patti (YT member) may have some ideas for you.

| I agree w/ Ellie May, 38 is not that high and could be just dehydration, I pray it's just that. My last Yorkie was 10yr when an ultrasound revealed she had one kidney that was not normal in size. I freaked out!!! She was put on k/d that day and her BUN was never below 40ish her creatine (SP) was also elevated. I want to say that creatine points more towards KIDNEY FUNCTION.. She lived to almost 15yr, the last 2 mo of her life (when i found this site) her BUN was over 100 sometimes over 160ish. She was given SQ fluids daily, but that didn't even make a difference at the end. I learned about Azodyl (after I joined YT) and researched the heck out it, i finally ordered it and recieved it the day before we put her to rest. I wish i just ordered it from day one, who knows maybe it could of made a difference. From what I've read and researched people have had good results. If in fact it turns out that his kidneys are "bad" please get your baby on it, your baby is so young that it may make a difference. My doctor never heard of it until i printed it out and brought it in to him...Some Dr. just aren't aware. THANK GOD FOR YT!!!! Please keep us updated!!

| A specialist did the ultrasound. He wrote that Kidneys marked fibrosis, inflamation, loss of archtecture c/w congential deformity vs less likely insult-infection. His urine also had blood in it and was very dilute. Which they say is bad. What is this Adolyz and where can I find it? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry to hear this. I had my yorkie, Dixie last year who I got at 6 months old from a reputable breeder, who Pixie is also from. I noticed shortly after getting her that her pee was clear and no odor. They tested her urine and found she wasn't concentrating her urine so they did a BUN and they called me an hout later saying there was nothing they could do she was in kidney failure. Her Bun was so high it didn't register on their machine. I couldn't believe it since she seemed ok, played ok, was a picky eater but never imagined this. I asked for a referral to a kidney specialist who said he had a lot of success with yorkies and kidney failure and that they can live with 27% kidney function. They did an ultrasound and her kidney's were so tiny and undeveloped, but we proceeded with treatment of IV fluids and started her on 3 out of 6 meds she would have to be on and within 2 days she was literally on death's door. She had such a terrible odor from the uremic poisoning that I had to sleep with perfume on my hands. I took her back to the specilaist and her BUN was 600 and nothing could be done. Her Bun had been around 400 the week before. He said due to her kidneys being so underdeveloped treatment wouldn't work. I had to put her to sleep. The Bun on your baby is not too bad and if his kidney's are ok on an ultrasound it could be something else throwing off the BUN score or there may be a lot of things they can do to help him. I know how panicked you must be right now but I would suggest a retest of hos BUN and if it is still high ask for a kidney specialist to see him. Please keep us posted and if I can help in any way let me know. I will keep him in mmy prayers.

| He was seen by a kidney specialist and had an ultrasound that also showed under developed kidneys. At this point he is not in Kidney failure but they say it will happen eventually. |

| TLC--YES YOU ARE RIGHT...It has NOT been out of the fridge since I had it. That's why I would need to know where I can find a cold pack envelope if she decided she wants me to send it.
