How frustrating! I am glad your boy drank his water ! it makes so mad that he has to be in pain in order to take it easy Were you able to talk the vet?

I don't think I would be very happy with my vet if this was his reasoning. Pain medications usually don't work that way; they just ease the pain. However, Joey did have this reaction to the pain meds, and with each successive dose he got more energetic, so after three doses we took him off, but this is an allergic reaction and not the common reaction, as most pain medications have a sedative effect. What made your vet think he would be running all over the house with a little pain medication? Unless the effect Joey had is more common than I realize? I know once we took him off the pain pains, Joey's vet said I could give him baby aspirin, but I can't remember the dosage. Glad he ate and drink water, he must be feeling a little better.

for all those about to go under the knife...be firm with ur vet or vet tec... theres nothing worse then watching ur furball in pain and theres nothing u can do about it.

I kinda thought they might say that....it's just the anesthesia and the trauma of the entire experience.....same thing with my female. They are correct about the pain meds. The theory is that while on them, they can't tell if they are straining the surgical site. Also, I know he likes them, but Beggin Strips are wwaaaayyyy NOT GOOD. I have been a Yorkie owner my entire life, and my son works at a petstore....they get all the inside scoop on the contents of food and treats. For now, while he is being finicky, try a small chicken breast in the microwave (you can add rice and peas), or steak if he doesn't tolerate chicken well. A little at a time. You can even try just the chicken breast, something that is appealing to him. As far as treats are concerned, my pups love chicken flavored biscuits (Newman's, etc.), rolled up piggie ears, dried sweet potato sticks....the healthy but tasty stuff. The commercial brands are loaded with fillers and fat. I know he will be just fine and as I said, as a first time mommy to a furbaby, you are just prone to worrying....we all are....it's that unbelievable love you have for your animal. Plus, it's always best to be safe...not sorry. We are all here to help...Lisa, Lilly & Jesse..

If my dog was in pain, I would not have left that clinic w/out medication to treat that pain - but that's me.

Also, if this were me - you can be sure I would never see this vet again. Dogs are individual creatures, and not medication protocols to be followed.

When humans are cut open, they experience pain and often the pain meds make it easier to deal with - it is not much different for dogs. Being in pain does not help healing - in fact there are studies out there to the contrary.

I'm really sorry it turned out for you this way - I feel bad for the dog most of all, since he is still in pain. And to me, this doesn't sound like minor pain.

So sorry to hear about Bambam. I have to agree with others, that if your little guy is not doing well, a little pain med will help him through it. Worse case is, if he starts to get too active you can take him off the pain med. As for the eating...did you try feeding him some wet food. If not, you can mix a little of the wet food with his dry kibble which may help stimulate his appetite. Poor little fella...I wish him a quick recovery.

it is now 5 days after bambam's surgery and he is feel better then ever. Though i am still having trouble with him wandering, he's as cheerful and cute as ever!!

I am sooooo happy to hear that. With normal conditions, they normally bounce back relatively quick. It's a huge thing for them, though, and the wandering is normal. He has to go through an adjustment period, post-op. He doesn't have his ornaments anymore... Mine is due to go in on April 24, and due to me being laid off from my job and having to cut costs, I am taking him to the local Humane Society to have this done. I'm hoping for the very same positive outcome. Lilly and Jesse give Bambam huge poochie smoochies and send their very best.....

it's great that Bambam is doing well now! i guess it makes sense to let them feel the pain so they don't do something to open up the wound... but i think i still would've insisted to have even just a small dose of pain meds. Teddi's getting neutered this Friday and luckily the vet will let him have some take-home meds. hopefully Teddi will be as brave as Bambam!
