| ![]() I've had Doolittle (3/4 Yorkie 1/4 Dachsund) 3 weeks. Except for a bout of earmites, everything was great until the past weekend. He first threw up Saturday night but was acting and eating fine. Over the next 2 days, he quit eating on his own but was still drinking. I was giving him nutrical and force feeding him A/D as the vet prescribed. Last night he quit drinking. He didn't even mind being put in his crate. I took him to the vet this morning and insisted they begin testing. His BUN was >130 (normal is 29) and his creatinine was elevated to 1.6 (normal 1.2.) An xray showed he might have an enlarged kidney but since he is so small (1.5 lbs) it wasn't definitive. They have him on an IV and were going to try an ultrasound to see if they could get a better view of his kidneys. Does this sound hopeless? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I got Dixie in Dec. 07 and she was 6 months old and seemed fine, she was from a great breeder who I had also gotten Pixie from but I noticed her pee was clear and had no odor so I took her to the vet and they did tests and found out she had congenital kidney failure. Her Bun was off the vets chart(600). I had her to a kidney specialist and he said that many dogs can live with 27% kidney function and thought she could be treated, unfortunately her kidney's never developed so treatment wouldn't help. It sound like you baby has kidneys and maybe some medicine will get him better. It does not sound hopeless, there is so much that can be done to help them with kidney disease. Also something else could be throwing the BUN off and with treatment he will be fine. Did you contact his breeder to see if she had any ideas? Keep us posted and I will keep him in my prayers.

| ![]() Tests yesterday showed his BUN at 209. Today it had gone down to 40! The vet was exremely surprised and happy it had dropped so much. The ultrasound showed it isn't congenital so they think he had to have gotten into something. Most likely, my husband dropped ibuprofen and didn't pick it up. I just got onto him about that a few weeks ago. We don't know for sure that is it; but, it does look like Doolittle might be okay. Yesterday when I went to see him I got some puppy kisses. Today he was very sleepy and didn't interact. I'm still hopefull though because of the test results. They are going to cap off the IV tonight or in the morning and retest 24 hrs later and hope that the BUN doesn't creep back up. Now, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to pay the already $700 vet bill. I'm glad my husband is on a mission trip in Guatemala. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() Glad to hear his Bun went down. Dixie's just kept going up so that seems like a good sign. I hope he will be just fine and come home soon. I know how expensive it is so you have my sympathies.

| ![]() The vet called this morning to say Doolittle's BUN is already back up to 90 and there is nothing they can do. Tomorrow I would have had him 4 weeks. He was a very loving puppy who loved to curl up at my neck when we sat in the recliner. I have asked the doctor not to put him to sleep until after I have come to see him but I don't know if I can do it. I'm so torn. I already love Doolittle but now I am out about $1500 total and still don't have a puppy. I'm going to have a hard time paying the vet bill. There's no way I can think about buying another puppy. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() I am so sorry. Can you talk to whoever sold you the puppy to see if he could have gotten into something when he was with them or if she has ever had this happen before. I am praying they can still help him.

| ![]() This brings back memories of my late Julz... could it be pancreatitis? I know that will cause those two numbers to be elevated and it's something that can be managed. Did the Dr. do any other testing???
