| Strain to go poo We have 2 12 week old girl yorkie puppys and one of them is having trouble going poo. Her stools were pretty hard and we have been adding pumpkin which has helped some. Sometime we go a few days normal then she strains for a day. This is our second litter and we have only had this problem on the one puppy. Can anyone offer some help, I hate to see the poor little thing having this trouble. |

| Diet The vet told us no dry food. She is pretty picky what she likes to eat. Is there a wet puppy food that might be softer on her? Right now we are giving her chicken breast with pumpkin and pears in a puree with lots of water. We have a person who wants to buy her but we do not want to let her go to a new home until she is having normal functions. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | metamucil is a human fiber product you can find in the supermarket. at 12 weeks old your puppy can be eatting dry food with no problems. i don't know why your vet said not to feed it. it will be easier for the new owners to feed dry and not have to fight with the transition from wet to dry. wellness, orijen, solid gold, and innova all have wet and dry puppy foods that are great.

| Softer the better This one has had trouble defecating since she was first introduced to wet/dry food. The dry food makes it even worse for her. I am trying to get her to drink more water but she has a mind of her own. The vet told us to give her lactulose to soften the stool, I don't think it works that well. Fiber may be the best in her diet. I thought the pumpkin would be enough. |

| You may be able to increase the lactulose dose to get the desired results (ask vet how much is too much) but if the fiber is working a little bit, maybe Metamucil will help even more.

| Carrots Do not give her extra fibers like metamucil, if she does not take in extra water it will make matters worse, just like in humans. It is fairly common to have yorkies with hard poop... give her baby carrots, raw, they love to chew on it, as long as she does not have any diarreia from it there is no limit you can give, but it looses it a lot, start with one baby carrot, cold from the fridge a day. Usually any dog loves it. Then see what happens and if it enough to regulate her, you may only need to give it once or 2 times a week. Then you can safelly send her home saying that she needs the extra fiber from her baby carrot to keep her regular. I only had one boy i got for my breeding that was like that and i got this advice from his breeder, it worked like magic and he is now regular and eats his dry food only and i never had a problem with him anymore.. he still loves the baby carrots, we give it as frozen treats on hot summer days, but only sparingly as it can really loose thir stools... Good luck!!!

| I have a four week old male that is straining and has a little bulge in his anus. I sub cued him earlier today with Ringers and I had been introducing them to puppy kibble soaked in esbilac, but all they have been doing is lapping the esbilac. They have tasted water and are still nursing. He's sleeping now. I was going to do an enema, but don't want to with his hiney so sensitive. How often should I sub cue to get him hydrated? Hopefully it will cause his anus to return to normal. The other 3 pups are fine.

| Much better Well the pumpkin and pear has helped her out alot. We also switched over to Wellness puppy soft food. No more strain, yippie. We starting the carrots today. Got the metamucil as a back up. I would guess it would be best to mix with water first and then add to the food. When our puppys anus was buldging we put some hydracortizone cream around the area, it helped her pass the hard stool. Guess you could use petroleum jelly also. We took her the first time to the vet and they gave her several enemas, poor thing was so sore from all of that. |
