| What anesthesia is used? Isoflurane and sevoflurane are best for maintenance. Something else may be used for induction. Propofol is a popular one. Is surgery done on a heated surface? Toy breeds lose body heat very quickly. Is an IV placed before surgery? If a problem comes up and medication has to be given immediately, that isn't the time to try and place an IV. It is also best for the dog to have fluids. Is preop blood work offered? This will show any major organ dysfunction and may change surgical protocol. Does the dog have to stay overnight? This is fine if someone is there awake with it but sometimes vets leave them alone all night right after surgery.. In that case, they would be safer at home. If this is being done as part of a low cost program, how much experience does the vet have? How is the dog monitored?
