| Pancreatitis?? Medication causes?? Well, my 3. 5 pound, 10 mo. old Millie gave me a scare. About 4am she woke me up pacing the bed. I thought she might need to go out, so let her outside, she had slightly soft stool, but no diarrhea or vomiting. She did drink a whole bowlful of water, which is abnormal for her. She calmed down for about an hour, but then woke me up shaking. She didnt stop shaking for about an hour and wouldn't walk around, this is all while waiting for the vet to open. Well, she was there today, they did lots of bloodwork. Her pancreas seemed tender and her enzymes were up about 5000. Otherwise, everything else was normal. So, Im trying to figure out what's causing this and what I do now. She has a catheter in her leg and goes back in the morning. She has been on Wellness puppy along with my other yorkie, Hunter. Every once in a while, I feed them Evanger's wet food as a treat. Otherwise, they are not big treat eaters, maybe a wellness jerky every now and then. She never gets people feed (except, of course, yesterday, she nabbed a lays chip literally the size of my thumbnail that fell on the floor). Otherwise, she only gets cheese when she needs to take medication. She did get her dose of Interceptor yesterday in the cheese. Does this have any link? Both her and Hunter have been on it and I have not had any problems. They gave her Royal Canin, just a few kibbles right now, but I know that most people don't like this food and am afraid they'll tell me to keep her on it. I am just really scared and she is so small and I've had to work long shifts and so my mom was the one who got her from the vet today. Does anyone have any more insight, I know I need to do more reading, but I got no sleep last night and have to work a 12 hour shift today and tomorrrow, so looking for any help until I can do more reading. Thanks so much and sorry for the long story! Jessica

| Awww. I'm so sorry for what you are going through. I don't know alot about it but there are several babies on here who are going through the same thing. I'm sure as soon as they see your thread, they will be able to post lots of helpful information, just know my thoughts and prayers are with you both! |

| I'm so sorry Millie has pancreatitis. Unfortunately, Yorkies are prone to it. Here is a good article for you to read: Pancreatitis (Inflammation) in Dogs |

| Our boy Freddie has had pancreatitis 3 times. He is on a strict diet of only canned low fat food and still got it. Unfortunately it can occur without any obvious or known cause. The good news is that the prognosis for it is usually good and most dogs that get it recover just fine. |

| Sorry to hear Millie is not feeling well. As soon as I read that you are feeding her Wellness, I recalled that a lot of dogs don't tolerate it well. So I googled "wellness dog food vomiting" and found lots of results that I expected. I am not "anti Wellness", but seriously would take your Yorkies off of it. Also, have your dogs had heartworms? Are they common in your area? If it were me, I'd put both of my dogs on the boilded chicken (or hamburger) and rice for a few days, stop the interceptor (unless there is a problem) and start fresh with a new kibble a few days later. Then start the interceptor again (if you feel it is necessary) and see if you run into any of the same problems. Please let us know how she is and how it goes if you try my suggestions. Praying little Millie gets well VERY SOON.

| sorry to hear she is sick. Layla has pancreatitis. You need to stop giving her cheese- at all. It is very high in fat and that causes pancreatitis issues. Pancreatitis is managed by diet and it is something your pup will now have forever- just because she stops puking doesn't mean it has gone away- you are just managing it and keeping her healthy. |

| We just had my granddog(yorkie), Mailee, in the hospital over the weekend with vomiting and diarrea...she was also on Wellness for Small Breeds...she has been on this kibble for about 2 months!! The vet could find nothing medically wrong with her...all tests were normal. I did some reading on this forum and we decided after some research to take her off of the Wellness...she has had no issues at all since she is not eating this food. She is running around, happy and healthy acting once again!!! I think it was the Wellness making her sick!! |

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Oh poor baby Millie. Izzy was just diagnosed with pancreatitis week before Thanksgiving and was hospitalized for three days on IV and meds. She now needs to be on a low fat/low protein diet for the rest of her life. Her Lipase, too, was over 5,000 which was mind boggling since she was only on holistic food and treats since I got her but even though the best still high in fat and protein. Stop the cheese I'm sorry to say and watch the fat and protein of all her foods. Izzy is now on Science Diet Prescription WD for about 4 months to calm it all down and then we will go to half that and half home cooking. It's frustrating and sad but with the right info and tools your baby can pull through this. I don't know what your monetary situation is but we also had a consult with a great nutrtionist and doctor out in California who helped us out so much. Good luck and let us know what your vet says.

| Millie is back home now and seems to be doing fine. Her levels are coming down and she is getting mini meals of the royal canin special food she needs to be on for the next 7 days. They will recheck her levels then. She was never vomiting or had diarrhea, thank goodness, and I had done food research and really had thought the Wellness was good, especially from a lot the opinions her. They both appeared to being fine on it for the past 4 months or so they have been on it, but I guess now its back to the drawing board with the food, if she can be slowly put back on regular food. Any other recommendations for dry food? They had been on Merricks before this, but I hesitancies with it and some of the quality control issues. I have also stopped with the Evangers wet food, since I wonder if this was too rich. I had no idea that wrapping her meds in cheese could be so bad, but I will now find another way to get them to take them. Also, she has a sensitive GI tract and has Tagamet (cimetidine) for as needed use, does anyone know if this could be problem as well? I really appreciate all the advice and well wishes!

Yorkie Talker | i just went through this with Sasha about 2 months ago. Definatley watch the fat in take. Her vet said that feeding her sausage and bacon triggered it. Of course it was only a little piece but that little piece had her throwing up for three days. First I thought it was just the sausage cause my dad gives her bacon. The next day i figured she ate to fast she does that sometimes but the third day she hadnt eaten yet and thats when i took her. the vet said that fatty/greasy foods cause it. So definatly watch that. also try to monitor how fast she eats. With sasha i had to give her a little at a time cause given her to much while her levels where up would make her throw up again. So i just gave her a little in the morning and a little at night. They put sasha on a diet of I.D. cant remember what it stands for but they gave me three cans kinda looks like rice and hamburger. They also gave her antibiotics for like 10 days so i would ask about that. Sorry Millies sick I know the feeling. Just make sure she knows her mommie loves her and will make her better. Sasha and Me P.S. one thing that comforted Sasha was laying beside me and getting her tummy scratched/rubbed it helped her fall asleep Last edited by sashasmomma17; 12-14-2008 at 06:35 PM. | There have been some posts about many pups getting sick from Wellness. I would definitely switch foods. Also, consider a consultation with a nutritionist (you can PM me if you'd like) for the right diet and enzymes. There are medications that can cause pancreatitis, but I have not read Interceptor being among them. In fact, this heartworm med has the lowest incidents of problems out of them all.

| Royal Cainine makes a very low fat canned and dry dog food. My yorkie would not eat dog food for anything, but loved this. You can order it from your vet. Also keep an eye on the bacteria growth in the GI tract. It is so hard when the little are sick. Best of luck |
