| Felix thows up several times a week. Hi, I am sooooo happy to have found this site! I didn't know so many other people loved Yorkies as much as I do!! I have a 13 pound Yorkie named Felix. He is the light of my life! So happy and loving. The reason I am writing this post is that my little Felix is that he has been throwing up quite a bit. I took him to the vet, has his poo checked for parasites and had his blood tested to make sure it wasn't anything serious. The vet put him on some medicine after discovering that he has no parasites and no indications of anything wrong through the blood work. The medicine was to coat his tummy. His throwing up slowed down quite a bit during the 10 days he was on the medicine.....of coarse, we also completely stopped feeding him any people food. He didn't get too much people food to begin with, but a little nibble hear and there. We live on some property and Felix has a hayday, chasing dear and protecting his property. Sometimes he gets burs(sp) these little tiny sticky weeds that stick in his fur. We suspected that maybe Felix was eating some of the burs and that might be what is making him sick. Although we typically get the burs out right away, Felix can be sneaky. Well, this week Felix has been burless.........but he has started throwing up again. Should I switch his food. He has been eating the same dog food forever, which is Natural choice chicken meal, rice and oakmeal formula adult dog food. When he throws up, it is always his food and water. Any suggestions?? |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. Does it happen to be Nutro Natural Choice? If it is, this may help: Consumer complaints about Nutro Pet Foods Nutro has been blamed for the deaths and illnesses of many dogs. If he isn't being fed this, it is always a good idea to bile acids test a Yorkie to look for liver problems and rule them out because the breed is so prone to liver shunt. Was it metronidazole that the vet put him on? Did the vet offer to put him on it for a longer period of time because it takes some dogs longer to recovery?

| Hi! Thank you soooo much. I looked up that link and am comletely freaking out! It is Nutro, so I am going to change his dog food right away. I am about to jump in my car. When I took Felix to the vet, I brought his dog food bag with me so the Vet could see what he was eating. He didn't say anything neg about the food. I don't understand that. It was Carafate that the vet put Felix on. He said to give it to him for 10 days, but I didn't ask about keeping him on it longer. thank you so much for your help and your welcoming message. |

| What food are you giving? If it is Nutro, I would switch him as soon as possible...Many people have reported illness and even death... What kind of people food were you giving? If it was fatty foods like chicken skin, pork, etc, I would be suspect something like pancreatitis...If no people food, then he could always have chronic gastritis or something like that. Did ALL of the bloodwork come back normal? Did you get copies for your own records/reference? Carafate is good for coating the tummy. Make sure and give it either 1 hr before eating or 3 hours after eating.

| Hi Yorkieluv! Yes, it is Nutro and I have been feeding that to him since he was just a pup! The people food he has gotten on occassion is never fatty. BBQ'd chicken that doesn't have any sauce is my usual diet. I would say he would get a couple of bites a week, nothing dramatic. My husband feeds him NO people food, no snacks, no exceptions. He is 13 pounds, so he is pretty big for a yorkie. Do you have any food suggestions? |

Vets don't study much about animal nutritionist in vet school, so most of what they know, they have studied on their own. Some also don't believe what they believe on the internet which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. Mostly with Nutro though, I don't think this link is very well known... As Yorkieluv said, if it isn't the food, I'd be exploring pancreatitis and gastritis issues.

| Yorkieluv, His blood test came back with a little low on white blood count, so I brought in a fecal sample. I didn't get a copy for myself.........I probably should have thought of that. |

| All these consumer’s pets coincidently have the same symptoms of drinking excessive water, throwing up and diarrhea. Some consumers are even claiming their pets on Nutro are suffering from a deficiency in white blood cells and have had kidney failures. On our last trip to Petco we noticed the Nutro shelves were almost empty and there was a sign that read “This product may not be available at this time due to manufacturing slow down“, however as I recall there were still bags left on the shelves, it was as if there was a recall but they were going to go ahead and sell the remaining bags. I remember James and I saying good thing we decided not to go with that brand it would suck to come to a store for puppy food and it be out of stock. We did not even consider a possible recall. FrenchieTink.com: A French Bulldog Blog » Blog Archive » Don’t Feed Your Dog Nutro! I'm sorry your baby is going through this. Please watch his kidneys.

My yorkie is also a "larger" yorkie weighing in at just above 11 lbs He is liver compromised so he has to be on a special diet. He has a history of gastritis from when he was on another food. If you're not interested in homecooking, there are several foods out there that you can try to switch your baby to. If it were my dog, I would probably try one of the allergy/sensitive tummy diets by Natural Balance like Potato and Duck. You can find these foods at Petco.

| I have a mini pet mart, a petsmart, and a grange co-op locally. I am not sure if any of these foods that were posted to this site are available this way? |

| I don't want to answer for Yorkieluv but it looks like she's off YT right now and I know you need an answer, so yes, she is talking about Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance.

Innova (kibble...the canned is too high in fat) and California Natural (both made by Natura) are also okay foods but may not agree with the individual dog. If you would like to feed canned, Evangers is a good line.
