| need advice--pink urine Yesterday morning I heard Atticus breathing strangely, like raspy gasping. I scooped him up and put him on my lap and couldn't see anything. After a few minutes he began to breathe normally. Soon afterward, I found a that Atticus had been chewing (destroying) a pencil. Also yesterday, he got a hold of some very small cranberry colored tree ornaments and chewed them up. His paws were pink from the die. Yesterday afternoon after both episodes I noticed a pink tinge to his urine. We use pads. This morning his urine was the same pink color. Now I'm supposing that what I'm looking at is blood in his urine. Although I'm not sure. He could have swallowed bits from both the pencil and the tree ornament. He seems normal otherwise. Anything I should be looking for? Should I take him to the vet right away?

| I bet he's just passing dye from the ornament, if he's acting fine I really wouldn't worry. If it was blood, I beleive it would be more reddish. If not gone in 24 hours I look into it. |

| I talked to the vet. We'll be heading there shortly. Meanwhile they asked if I could get a urine sample. I turned his pee pad over and waited. He was a good boy and went for me and his urine is not pink. It is orange. very orange. Our appt is in an hour.

| Just got back from the vet. They have no definitive answer. We'll now blood and urine results in the morning. I'm worried but not too much because other than the orange color of his pee, Atticus is acting quite normally.

| Great news. The vet called. Blood and urine are all pretty normal. The urine is very concentrated. He needs to drink more water. Any suggestions as to how to encourage that?

| Ice cubes-my two love playing with them (they do get a little messy) Pedialyte-the dye-free apple flavor will help hydrate him quickly, and it has a sweet taste to it Kongs-if he likes them, freeze with a dab of peanut butter to plug up the end, add some mashed banana and fill the rest with water. He'll enjoy licking out the PB and banana and get some more water as well Wet food-Not sure if you're feeding him kibble or canned-but canned/wet homecooked food has more water than dry kibble alone. DO NOT add water to kibble though, it can make them sick (not sure why, but I have heard that) And-make sure there is at least one (if not two) large bowl of clean, cool water available at all times for him to drink. Rinse the bowl well each time you fill it up, and run it through the dishwasher every other day.

| Add equal parts water or more to each meal. For example, if you give 1/4 cup of foosd at each meal, add at least 1/4 cup of water to the kibble. Giving canned would be even better.
