| New to the Community/Liver shunts Hello, my name is Jennifer and my yorkie's name is Jolliver. He is 10 months old and a wonderful little puppy. He is my first baby so i was new to the whole mommy role. I quickly learned that puppies are just like real children. I learned about this website after doing research on liver shunts. I read on here about a family who had learned that there little baby had one and they had taken their baby to UT Knoxville Vet. Teaching School. Our vet referred us there and i must say it has been a long couple of months. We went two weeks ago finally and they ran two test. one of the test ruled out a single large shunt so we did not have to have surgery, however we did have a liver biopsy done and we are still waiting on the results of that test. They think it may be the type of shunts were there are many shunts on the inside of the liver. they said it could be managed by diet. we have started that diet and have high hopes that he will live a long life. I will keep you updated. |

| Welcome to YT! Liver shunts are very common in Yorkies, unfortunately. In fact, Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined. Here is some great information on liver shunts and disease: Hepatic Vascular Disorders - WSAVA 2006 Congress Portosystemic Shunts FAQ |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome. Sorry to hear about your baby. My Cali has the internal shunt but it is so mild that no treatment is necessary. She was diagnosed by a liver biopsy too. Hope it's very mild.
