| Excessive panting after whelping? Happy gave birth to four puppies this morning at 3 am. She has had about 6 eggs 3 slices of cheese, milk, water...and 1/2 of her calcium dosage since whelping... she has urinated once... What is wrong with her? Why is she panting so hard? I dont see anything int the books...

| Sounds scary to me, I'd definitely call an ER vet and see what they say. Eclampsia is a real possibility and you don't want to wait too long to get her medical attention if this is indeed what is going on. Also try posting this in the Breeders section. Oh, also, if you're using a heating pad or lamp, make sure that Momma can get away from the heat, like only have it under half of the bed for the puppies. Prayers going up that your girl is just fine

| Thank you I took her to the ER after they opened after the storm cleared... She has Pacreatis... I dont know how, but it must have been the fatty foods. The only thing new she had was a can of gravy train chicken to mix with the eggs so she would eat it..I wanted to have a little meat. I think that was a bad combination...so I am waiting for her regular vet to open to schedule her follow up. Her calcium level was great.

| sorry i am laughing... pancreatites is the first thing that came to my mind when i read your post.... why do you feed her all this "variety"??? I never have problems and i feed a half can of SCIEND DIET A/D first then 2 or 3 hours later i feed again the other half and then 4 hours another half for the first day .... they get very hungry and would eat a "cow" but this is all i feed. Not more than 2 cans a day 24hr period.... a bit at a time to avoid stomach upsets. This is a prescription diet you can get at the vets office...: easy to digest, very rich, very caloric and has lots of calcium.... Good luck.. let us know how they treated her...

| I was afraid that she would get calcium depleated and she is so fickle with eating and the last litter...she would eat the cheese and eggs... this is definitely a well learned lesson 332.00 dollars later...I am feeding the en v the vet gave me and then she goes back strickly to dry when this episode is over...nothing else.... I was an overzealous nut!!!!!!!!!!

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Another thought is her hormone levels are out of whack since being preggers and whelping. Mine pant...not excessively because they get hot.
