Inflamed butt

I woke up this morning and my Yorkie, Huey, usually is up and about. Well I went in my second bedroom and he was laying on the bed. He looked to have had an accident, maybe diarrhea. So I put him in the bath tub and he had some poop hanging off his butt area. I washed it all off and noticed that his butthole was larger and inflamed. He also had like an area above his butt that looked like it does when someone gets a skinned knee, red and looks like it hurts. I took him out of the bath and usually he runs around and acts like a crazy dog. But he just went and laid in his bed. His butthole is still larger than it usually is. I am wondering if this is due to the feces that was sticking out when I gave him a bath or why. I called another dog owner and she told me to give him a little baby tylenol and to watch him.

I am a bit worried about this. He has never had this before and will be 3 soon. Any one experience this or can any one give me any advice?

Could he have anal gland abcess or is it not the right place, usually 10 and 2ish o'clock i think'?

I am not sure if that is what it is, as his butt is still pretty red and inflamed. I am going to watch him closely for the rest of the day.

No hon, take him to the vet asap! It sounds like his anal gland has ruptured! I went thru this about a yr ago with my Bubba. Don't wait - call & see if you get into a vet so you don't have to wait & go to the ER vet.

Poor baby. I was going to say try a little vasoline but after Yorkiesmiles post I would agree you better get him to a vet. Keep us posted

Take your dog to the vet. a rupture is not good! Infection can set in and things will get worse from there.

Anal glands do not secrete poisons - they are for scent marking. If they rupture it is because they are already infected and the abscess is not able to empty - thus they rupture to the outside on either one or both sides of the anus. It is a situation which requires veterinary attention. The glands will need to be flushed, may have a drain placed and the animal will be placed on antibiotics. Nursing care will be required throughout recovery. If chronic/frequent in nature, removal of the anal glands after healing may be recommended. It is not without risk of complication though.

Your boy may not want to eat or be lethargic - he has an infection and needs antibiotic. We had something, that I literally had to insert into the reputured hole - not fun, and then I was worried that his sacs weren't emptying right, so we did have them expressed one other time - since then - no problems

I took him to the ER Vet and he said that he has a bad infection around the lining of his anus. He had to have two injections of antibiotics and antibiotics were also sent home with him. The vet said that if it does not start to get better in 3 days that I will have to get a biopsy on it. He said and even so that he probably will require surgery to put the lining back in place. My poor baby just lays around and I am still pretty worried. I am glad that I took him in though!

I am soooooo glad you went. You should start to see a difference in him by tomorrow evening - once those antibiotics kick in. So did the gland actual rupture or it is actually his anus?

Did the vet say how this might have happened? Had your boy,been straining or seem constipated at all? Or doing the boot scooting? What's your guy's name?

We had no signs here when we had problems, until it was too late

I hope there is a difference in him! His name is Huey. The vet said he check his anal glands and the left one had a little fluid in it and nothing with the right, so it was not those. The lining of the inside of the anus had become infected and was starting to push outward to the outside of his poor little butt. The vet said he did not know how it happened. He has not been constipated or anything. He has been really good and active until this morning. So it came on suddenly. I am staying home this weekend with him so I am going to watch him very carefully. His poor butt and he looks a little funny now too because they had to shave the area so he looks like one of those moneys with the bare bottoms.

Hopefully things will clear up with the antiboitics and we will have no more problems.
