| Round red cherry looking thing poppin out I have a 7 months old male yorkie. Yesterday I noticed a round cherry looking thing popping out from his private part. I figured it must be an erection but he was acting really strange last night. Normally, he's very playful but last night he was quiet and still. Sleeping a lot as well. Well its been over 15 hours and the round cherry thing has not gone away. Ive never owned a male dog before. Can someone tell me if this is normal cause I'm beginning to worry. Thanks. |

| That is really weird, and I know it might be embarrassing to you and him, but at this point, maybe you should take a pic??? That is definitely not normal and most likely painful for him

| It's not good for their penis to be out so long. Call your vet! I hope he's okay

| No, this is not normal. Can you take a little vaseline and see if you can lubricate it so it goes back in on it's own? Otherwise, it is an emergency and you need to take him to your vet asap. Here's some information: http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/bre...reprotract.htm |

| boo-boo It is like putting a rubber band around your pinkie...the blood swells and it hurts...get the penis back in the sheath and check him regular..neuter him if he is not..good luck |

| Thanks for all the great advices. Fortunately, he's back to normal however I will contact my Vet just in case it happens again. He looked pretty sad last night so it mustve bothered him much. I don't want to take any chances. Ladymom thanks for providing the link. |

| Just read the link Ladymom posted. My puppy is a little over 3 months and he has no testicals that I can see. Is this normal for his age or is something wrong with him. now i'm worried. |

| Re. the pup with the penis not returning to the sheath.... make sure he's very tidy all around his groin... sometimes the penis can extend a bit, then get caught in the hair around his sheath and either become entangled, or just get too dryed out to return properly to the sheath. I had the same problem with my little fellow...never having owned a male dog OR a longhaired one before....but now I keep him trimmed short in his groin and halfway up the belly.... MUCH more hygenic, sweeter smellling, and no more problems with his penis. Good luck |

| KathrynS - if you little guy is 3 mos. old, the testicles are probably there, just so tiny they're difficult to feel. In MOST puppies, they're already down by the time they get their first vaccines, but it's difficult for the owner to palpate them. I was concerned that Tyke didn't have them either when I got him at 5 mos. Sure enough, at his exam, the vet smiled and told me they were there but I'll be darned if I could find them. There IS a condition called monorchidism (sp?) in which the testicles don't descend...or perhaps only one descends. This isn't a huge deal unless you're thinking of breeding...in which case you shouldn't use that particular dog as the condition is congenital. When the pup is old enough to be neutered, the vet can still remove the testicles, but will have to do a more intrusive surgery to go in and get the little blighters. |
