Hi every one this is my first time on this site , I have a new baby yorkie his name is Billy he is 17 weeks old and gorgeous. He as double dew claws on his back legs I have never heard of this before he will have them removed when I have him neutered . I was really put out when I found them as anyone else heard of dogs having them .

Hello and welcome to YorkieTalk. I have been raising yorkies for over 17 years and I have only encountered rear dewclaws out of two sisters I acquired many years ago. Both sisters produced pups with rear dewclaws but they were not double. None of my yorkies from my lines have ever produced rear dewclaws. I did not keep any of the pups from the lines that produced the rear dewclaws so I don't know if that trait would of been carried on.

Hi thanks for your reply, even though I find double dew claws rather strange , at the moment they dont seem to be bothering him . But I will be glad when he can have them removed before they cause any trouble.

Dewclaws are naturally occuring in many breed of dogs. Double dewclaws which I assume you mean 2 dewclaws on one leg is fairly rare. I would seek advice as to why is it necessary to remove them? Is their position likely to interfere and or hinder the health of your dog? If so - how so? If there are two on each leg maybe you only need to remove one of them on each leg.

Hi yes he as two claws on each hind leg , one claw seems normal then the other is a very small nail which is very floppy . I think he may just need the floppy one removed. I think it could cause trouble if left . He as normal ones on his front legs . Strange.

My Pixi had the same little floppy dew claw! We had it removed during a cyst removal. It just needed 1 stitch and never seemed to bother her at all. I was just worried it would get caught on something and pull.
It was just a snip to remove and we never gave it another thought.

Wow I have never heard of dewclaws on the rear legs, let alone double ones! I would def remove the floppy one during neuter but leave the other one IF the vet says it is securely attached. Normal securely attached dewclaws under normal circumstances should not hinder their ability to do anything.

One of our members here Mimimomo had one of her yorkies rip out a dew claw on the carpet. Ouch! He had a floppy one I guess. That is the only worrisome thing. If they are secure then no worries, other than you have to check it for nail length often since it does not touch the ground, and therefore walks will not file it down naturally.

Thanks for all your comments he will definitely have just his floppy dew claws off when I get him neutered when he reaches around 6 months old. Just hope he as no trouble with them till then . I think I will have his micro chip done at the same time , get everything done altogether.

Great Pyrenees are suppose to have double dew claws in rear. Most working dogs dewclaws should be removed at 3 days or less (at that time they are only attached by a thin skin.
One think about Yorkies.....watch those dew claws when dressing them. If they get caught in clothing, it can really hurt them.....think your finger being pulled backwards, hard. Katy has front dew claws that I wish had been removed.
