| A Yorkie and a Cat? Hi everyone, I have a 3 year old domestic short haired cat and she is a sweetie. However I have fallen in love with the Yorkie breed and will probably get a puppy in the next few months. In anyone's experience, how have their Yorkie puppies gotten along with cats? Does anyone have any advice for how to introduce them so that they will get along? Thanks so much! |

| I have a cat and two yorkies. They really dont get along but at least tolerate each other. My yorkies sometimes bark at my cat. You might either hold the puppy or keep it contained when you first introduce to the cat. Let the cat sniff the pup on his terms. Hope that helps.

| Three's Company! I have two yorkies and a cat. The cat was there first then maybe 7 months later I got Gizmo.... he and Tommy(the cat) love to play..... tommy is really good w/ Giz.... Gizmo is actually the BULLY!! He loves to chew on Tommys ear's and pull his tail.. my cat will just lay on his side and let him or just give him a , "c'mon man, leave me alone puh-lease!" Then this past month Dec.23rd I got Maddy, she loves to mother EVERYONE... and they all get along good... Tommy is getting on his lazy stage as do all cats so sometimes he sleeps all day and goes out and everything is fine. Just remember the older the cat gets the lazier and less interested they get.... haven't you heard the term, "lazy cat"...... good luck! |

| P.s I would just get on my fours and put the pup in front of me and let them crawl to each other or let the cat come over, you don't want the cat to feel like you are favoring one over the other. Make sure to pet the cat the whole time through the first introduction and maybe say something like," ohh... look at the little baby ... it's so little ... now you have someone to play with .. since you are such a good boy/girl.. etc.." somthing to that effect. In other words soothe the cat so it does not feel threatened by the pups presence... hope this helps! ************************************************** ** By the way... (sorry had to add this).. When Maddy came home she met Tommy(the cat) the very next day Christmas Eve.... well needless to say he took one look at Maddy and then looked up at me as to say, " AWWW MOM another one!!!" hee hee it was soooooo funny!!! Sorry had to tell ya'll! Ohh shoot there's that Texan slang!@! Last edited by cindy0721; 01-03-2006 at 08:33 AM. |

| I have had my cat, Callie, for 10 years and just got Rocky back in October. I at first Callie was not to thrilled and mad at me. I just gave her lots of love and she realized that she was bigger than the Rocky. Know they play together and even sleep together. Somtimes I see Rocky chasing Callie and other times I see Callie chasing Rocky (its pretty funny). If Callie gets sick of Rocky messing with her, she lets him know and then gets up on something to get away from him. |

| Our cat was just under 3 years old when we got our Yorkie the first of July. She wanted nothing to do with him for the first couple months. Now she comes out and the dog chases her around. At first we thought they were fighting, but if he doesn't chase her she'll stop and hiss at him to make him start again. To make the transition more comfortable we gave the cat 2 safety rooms. The office and our bedroom have baby gates at the door so the cat can come in but the dog can't. This also keeps the dog from eating her food or poop. Our cat will often start a chase and then jump a gate and taunt the dog from the other side. She'll evil like that.

| Yorkies and cats go well together, kinda like peanut butter and jelly. It may take some time for your furkittychild to adapt, but in time they will be the best of buds. |

| Thank you everyone!! I think I will probably have to keep my Yorkie contained when my kitty first meets him or her...she is very cautious about new things! But now I feel a lot better that the two will get along! |

| small zoo We have three yorkies, one inside cat, one partially inside and outside cat, two ferrets and three rats!!! They all get along pretty well. Our inside cat loves to lay in wait and when one of the trio comes along he pounces and then its off to the races and they are running through the house and then they switch and the cat chases the dogs!! The ferrets they love!! Go figure!! The rats are a bit of a different story - as you know they were bred to be ratters - and Piper would love nothing better than to get a hold of one of them!!! The other two could take'm or leave'em - might be a different story if they could get them out in the open but I don't think I need to find out what they would do in that case!! |

| i have the most anti social cat you could ever meet and i thought that she would absolutely despise having a dog around. come to find out she loves having him around. Even if your cat doesnt seem like she likes your dog at first she'll probably just learned to either ignore him/her or love em! good luck. let us know how it goes!

| i have found over the years that it is easier and they interact more like siblings if the cat comes into a dog/cat situation as a kitten with the dog allready present. . . when cats are older they will adjust in time, but it is easier if the kitty comes in as a baby instead of full grown (does this make sense) |

I agree with the yorkie owner who said it would be best if the kitty comes in last as a kitten, then a puppy yorkie coming in to a grown cat BUT... you can't turn back time, nor do I suspect you want to trade in your cat! I just got my yorkie 4 months ago, I traveled home to NY to visit with sister & her fur-group. I have one yorkie pup & 2 birds - she has 14 dogs, 9 cats and who knows how many birds... I was really surprised her cats played with my puppy, and very well too. My puppy was 100% interested in ONLY the cats tails. Chased one then the others... (maybe cause hers is so short ???) Her cats also have no front claws. At any rate, I questioned my sister about this and she said most older cats would "P" on beds or furniture once a new dog or even sometimes a new cat was introduced, she claims very common, however hers did not, she felt because they were so used to all the other animals she owned. I would guess the worse you could expect is that, keep your eyes (or nose) open, how to solve it might lead to another thread.... | |

| We got the Yorkie first and then we got a kitten. They are INSEPERABLE and are the best of friends. They're constantly playing, wrestling, and even CUDDLING! Hehe. It's great.
