YT 2000 Club Member | Baby food question... I had this in the food section above but since no one answered my question I decided to repost it here, since the question was about my toy poodle..good morning everyone. My toy poodle is very picky and has been since we got her as a pup almost 2 years ago. Her breeder had her on pedigree cannesd. I kept her on it because she was so little, around 1 pound when we got her and I figured if she was eating/gaining then I wasnt going to mess with it. After a few months of having her and she was gaining weight I tried switching her over to a higher quality food. I tried everything, wet and dry. She would eat it for a few days then stop and she would literally not eat for days only what people food I would feed her so back on the canned pedigree she would go. I couldnt let her starve and I was petrifed that she would get hypoglycemic. Well she wont eat that anymore either and honestly with thier more recent recalls I dont want her on it. I sent away for some free samples and got lots of chicken soup and taste of the wild and have sucesssfully switched my other 2 dogs over to chicken soup but Lexee wont touch any of it. I read on here that you can give the chicken baby food, so I bought some and she loves it. (for now) she lapped the entire spoonful that I gave her and looked at me for more. (im taking it slow, not to mess with her little system.) This morning I tricked her and mashed up some taste of the wild in with the spoonful of baby food and she agian lapped it up. So my question is, is it ok to give this to her everyday? Will it be too much protien with the taste of the wild mixed in? She has gone to the bathroom this morning and it was normal. My plans are to feed her 2 times a day (like always) for a total of the 2 ounces of baby food and a 1/2 cup of the taste of the wild. She always has dry food out, but rarely touches it. Im sorry that this isnt yorkie related but Im not sure where else to ask and this board always has good info and advice. thanks in advance Terri __________________ Very proud mom to a houseful of children, varies furbabies and my little yorkiepoo Tucker .. born 9/22/08 http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ser_online.gif http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ons/report.gif

| Hi Terri. I can understand why you dont' want to just let her starve until she is hungry enough- she is so teeny. What is the fat content of the baby food? I'd just worry that it is a bit high... but if you can use less and less baby food or as least as possible it would be great. Can you try mixing it with Yogurt? Layla will eat ANYTHING in yogurt- or can you mix the dog food with cottage cheese? As long as she is eating MOSTLY dog food you don't ahve to worry about her lacking in nutrients. ... Quote:

| I used to give Britney baby food when she first came home because she wouldn't eat hard food for the first week or two. Her vet recommended mixing her hard food with a prescription wet food called A/D. I think I also heated it. Just a suggestion- Maybe you could call your vet and look into that.

YT 2000 Club Member | Thanks so much for your advice. I have tried the yogurt and cottage cheese in the past and she wouldnt touch it. I looked at the fat content on the jar and its 7 percent? That seems pretty high to me. I tried something a little different this morning, I coated her dry food with a small amount (tip of a teaspoon) of the chicken baby food and she ate it!! If I do this and the jar last 3 days will it be still be to much? I dont want to harm her little system but I cant not let her eat either. My husband thought I was crazy for buying her baby food and he said that she will eat when she gets hungry enough and I argued with him for an hour that she wouldnt. He said that a dog will not let its self starve, maybe not however because of her size Im not willing to wait to find that out.

| My poodles are fussy eaters. When Molly was a pup, she wouldn't eat her dog food either... I put baby food in it (watch out, onions are a nono) and warm water and canned (got her sick). So, with all that fuss, I just started cooking for her. It works out well. I cook for all four of mine. The vet approves. They have beautiful coats and are always happy at mealtime. Also, that way, you know what you are putting in your food. With dogfood, who knows--- |

On the gerber jar.. the label reads: total fat 7 percent trans fat 0 sodium 35mg potassium 110 mg total carb 2g fiber 0 sugars0 protein 8 g ingredients are grounded chicken, water (doesnt say how much), and corn starch Beechnut jar: total fat 1.5 trans fat 0 sodium 60 mg potassium 120 mg total carb 0 fiber 0 sugars 0 protien 8 g ingredients: ground chicken and chicken broth.. doesnt list water Is either one of them better than the other? (if that makes sense ) She is also eating 1/3 cup of taste of the wild, bison and venison mixed in with about a teaspoon of the baby food split into 2 different meals. One around 7 am and the other around 5. She eats it right up and seems content after each meal. I have noticed for the first time since she was a pup that she has a lot more energy and is wake more during the day. She is also shaking a whole lot less (use to be a huge issue for her, she would curl up in a ball and just shake no matter what she had on or wrapped up in ) She is filling out a little bit, her poops are small and hard, she is itching less and her coat is already showing signs of improving so unless what Im feeding her is harming her IM not going to change anything.
