Fingernail problem. HELP!

I tried acrylic nails for the first time about three months ago and had them removed a week or two ago after several fills. I got tired of messing with them and the expense. Anyway, I have one nail that is like rice paper. It has split down beyond the quick a bit over 1/8". Where the nail is split the two halves of the nail are curling under into the fingernail bed. This is tender, but not really painful. It just keeps getting caught on everything. I tried mending it by securing a steri-strip to it with super glue. That lasted about a week then fell off. Beyond wearing a band aid until the darn nail grows out, is there any other fix? Is there a way to mend the nail to secure it until it grows out, without going the acrylic route again? Those shops should post warning signs that acrylics can trash your nails.

Good luck...I had mine off for 9 months and they were still paper thin. I caved in and got them put back on. Try Nailtiques After Nail Treatment...it will help your nails to heal after artificial nail removal. My nails were horrible before I ever had them put on in the first place but if yours were healthy before, you should be able to get them back that way in time.

Nail strenthener is the only thing I can think of too.

Good luck. I had them on only 2 wks for my wedding. I NEVER even got a refil. I had to take them off before returning to work but it took 6 months for my nails to get back to normal. Good luck with yours. If you are catching it on things i would definately keep it covered. You will just keep ripping it open and it will never heal. Yikes.. goodluck!

They file your nail bed down to adhere the glue for the arcrylic, that can cause fungus or infection.
I had to have a nail removed b/c of this. You are well advised to let your nails go natural to avoid this. It is not worth it ...

Paronychia is infection of the cuticle.
This very common hand infection can be caused by an injury to the nail and cuticle, nail biting, or aggressive manipulation of the cuticle during a manicure. Paronychia can be caused by many different bacteria, including Pseudomonas and Proteus. The cuticle and tissue at the margin of the nail become red, swollen, and intensely painful. If left untreated, an abscess will develop and can spread to the fingertip (leading to a felon) or to the bone.
The doctor makes the diagnosis by examining the affected finger. In its earliest stage, paronychia may be treated with oral antibiotics and frequent warm soaks to increase the blood flow. If an abscess develops, it must be surgically drained.

nailtiques is awesome! Id use tissue and nail glue to bond the nail back together (probably have to do this every 3-4 days), file jagged edges best as you can and polish daily with nailtiques! Try taking prenatal vitamins for awhile, they will help your nails grow faster and help to strengthen them also! Acrylics kill your real nails, next time try gels they are less harsh on your real nails but not as strong as acrylics. Good Luck!!

I dunno, you may have to go the bandaid route I wore acrylics for about 9 months and it took over a YEAR for my nails to grow back right. They were so thin and had receded to where they were less than 1/4" long Horrible! I'll never do them again

Thanks for your suggestions. I don't have any issues with the cuticle, the issue is at the finger tip. Now, the whole top 1/8' or so of the nail from the tip has lifted away from the nail bed. I guess I will keep it covered till it grows out.
