Allergies to Shellfish and Iodine Does anyone else here have this, too?? I don't know what to eat and what can't I eat. Last night, as you guys may have known, it was my brother's wedding! They started serving food at 7:30 so we were eating. They brought out this lobster with cheese or whatever you call it and it looked so delicious, I ate a little piece. Last year, I had gone to the allergy doctor and he informed me that I was allergic most to dustmites, and runner up was shellfish. I ate the lobster anyway because I figured I have been eating shellfish (lobster, clams and mussels) forever and nothing happened. Sometimes when I eat crawfish, I get itchy but I stopped eating crawfish only. Well, last night about 30 minutes after I ate the lobster.. my hands started itching, my face was swollen and I could feel my throat start to close up so they called the EMS for me. I was in the ER for 2 1/2 hours! It costed me $1,200!

Me too Yes, but I am allergic not only to shellfish, lobster, crab, shrimp, but any ocean fish, apparently it is the mercury in them. I am also allergic to all jewelry, including gold, silver, platinum, etc. Nickel is extremely devastating to me. I am allergic to pennicilin, iodine, adhesive tape and will break out in hives from a bandage. I cannot wear a dress, or pants where any metal from zippers, buttons etc touch my skin, I get a reaction. I have been hospitalized several times for reactions. I laugh and tell my friends that if I ever wanted to get married again (NOT) that I would be a perfect wife, allergic to jewelry, detest furs and hates shopping LOL

Yes, and I just developed it in the past 3-4 years. It sucks! Because lobster is my favorite food and if I have too much of it, in 8 hours time, I get itchy and red bumps ALL over my body, my throat swells up, and I feel like it'll never go away. It seems shrimp, scallop, crab, and lobster are my problems, I can eat clam and oysters just fine. It's just so odd that I could eat it without any problem at all up until a few years ago.

Yes shell fish which I love does not love me - but luckily we have the NHS so when I had a severe reaction to cod which I later found had been handled by someone who had been preparing shell fish before, it didn't cost anything to get treated.

| My sister developed an allergy to crawfish. She would take benadryl before she would eat it! The allergy has since gone away. I guess her body was temporarily allergic to the iodine or something. Here in south Louisiana, you're at an extreme disadvantage if you can't eat seafood. Seafood is sooo abundant . . . fish, shrimp, crabs, crawfish, oysters . . . all fresh and harvested locally!!! That's a shame for anyone to be allergic to something soooo delicious! My heart goes out to you for having to miss a large part of your brother's wedding reception!
