Donating YT 11K Club Member | Stories of a waitress.... Sometimes I just hate serving people!!! I have been working at the restaurant for about 1 month and a half and I am just about fed up with it. I usually work night shifts and the morning menu is different so when I finally worked morning shift I had a couple problems. First off these people ordered 1 egg roll with bacon and eggs and bacon for their son. You have to charge extra for the bacon and the comp. does it for you automatically. They told me ONE roll but when their food came they complained and said they ordered 2. They called for the manager, for no reason cause they could have EASILY just told me they wanted another one, enen though they did not ask for it. So he came and took care of it. When it was time to pay the wife told me that bacon does not charge, that it comes with the rolls. Since I was new I was like okay, maybe I'm wrong and took it off. Well it does charge, of course now I know that. So the wife asked the manager and said "You don't charge for the bacon right? I just want to make sure I'm right..." and the manager said "you're right". Later I found out he did that because he tried to eliminate problems so he just didn't charge them. Unless he forgot....but I was right, we do charge extra. At that time I had another table and this lady was waiting for me and while I did notice her there I was told not to go, and to wait while the manager finished talking to my customers to apologize. So I waited and apologized! Then when I took her order she was pissed and took her time to tell me how she had read her entire newspaper and had been waiting a while. Not true!! She was waiting 5 min. So she ordered a bagel and nova. When she got her food she was pissed and sent it back because it had no nova. Nova is Salmon but I didn't know that because when people order the bagel and salmon usually they just say SALMON. She too asked to speak to the manager. Boy I was on a roll!!!! The manager came up and took care of it. Of course everyone and their mother was in my business seeing what happened (the other am waiters). So when the lady left with the thick accent she left me NO tip. Watever I didn't care as long as the other waiters weren't so nosy. I hate AM shifts and I refuse to work them now because I don't really get along with the AM servers. They are always in my business. The other day one of them opened one of my check books to see how much tip a table left me. She's a total bit**. Then today this other waiter said she wasn't going to fill up the oil and vinegers anymore because I had to do them. She said it with an attitude. I didn't know that was part of my sidework and nobody ever told me or where to get the vinegar and oil from. She is just sooo annoying. We all ignored her. I prefer the PM servers, we get along, they are much niser and help a lot. Although I think I might quit. Today these people had a $55 bill and left me a $2 tip and I was nothing but nice to them and did everything they asked. Turns out though that they always only leave $2 tip because another waiter told me they've done that. Another day this couple left me no tip because they were waiting for their change for a while. It was REALLY busy that day and I had tons of people to serve. Then ppl come in demanding that their food comes quick because they are in a rush yet it's really busy, and food takes longer to make. But they take it out on me! And when the drinks take long because of the slow bartender, it's MY FAULT!!!! I don't make enough to be pissed off everyday I work. Yes there are some very nice people but a lot are really rude and nasty. I think I'm done. Srry for the sooo long post, I just need to let it out. If no one reads this it's fine, I just had to write it out somewhere. |

| Man, sounds like you had a rough day!! Sorry to hear that Don't worry about those people. Tomorrow is a new day, and maybe just see how it goes. It might just take some time. Any job in customer service is tough because people can be sooo rude. You know, I always wonder, how hard is it for people just to be nice and civil?

| I am sorry your day started out so badly. I have never been a waitress but I can imagine working extra hard to be nice to someone and they leave you NO tip at all. That sucks! Tomorrow is a better day sweetie

| Aww. I'm sorry you had such a crummy day! I remember those long days on your feet carrying heavy trays of food and getting no tips , no thanks, and an earful of someone elses bad day pushed off on you. But there are the good days too, when someone just makes your day brighter. Tuck those ones away and bring them out to remember when you have a day like today. |

| What a terrible day! I think some customers give the wait staff a hard time hoping to get money taken off of their bill by a manager. Waiters and waitress work too hard to be treated like that. I wish resturants would automatically add the 20% for the server, and then if the service is extra good, the customer might give extra. I tip at least 20% no matter how off the service is because I know how hard the work is, and how low the pay.

| Don't you just love the service industry? LOL! I've never been a waitress but boy do I have some stories to tell about retail, LOL! I don't envy you I've reached this phase in my life where it's very, very hard to bite my tongue and I think they would have fired me the first day. You are definitely a trooper! I hope it gets better for you! |

I waitressed and bartended all through school, so I know how hard it is. I remember one time I busted my butt waiting on a table of 10 men who were having lunch with drinks. The bill was over $400 and they left me $20... IMHO NOBODY is above common courtesy!!

| HM WEll... As an Expierienced watress I know you just have to take the good with the bad and let it roll off you . here are some tipa and trick that might help you. ALWAYS when you forget somethign like that extra coffee or dessert or piece of pie or anything they asjk for... tell them you are waiting for FRESH....LOL I used to say this all the time when I messed up and people loved me for waiting for the FRESH BATCH . I also have to say I always gave freebies to people. As long as it was somethign i could get myself such as drinks salads , soups deserts, whatever, I would throw it in if the person had a LONG wait for food or service. usually I would start off saying dessert was on the house for all the trouble they went through or having to wait so long. PEOPLE LOVE when they think they get special attention .... it's best to work this angle with customers. Also usually calling a manager would only end up with the same freebies so noting lost except a SCENE!!!!! As for tips.... if you stay someplace long enough you will find al the $2 add up. I had so many regulars that I KNEW what my tip would be even before they ordered. I LIKED these people because you always had an EASY table that was nice to you. Also remember some people only have but so much money and only can afford to leave you but so much tip!!!!!Now I agree those people that leave the $1 tip for a party of 4 get on your nerves but just smile and be nice and lots of times you will find if they keep coming back the tip grows. Last but not least.... Evening shift always makes you more money.Morning shift makes you less the basic differnce is what schedule you can work

Mom to Marty & Maddie Donating Member | I completely understand your frustration. I was a server at Ruby Tuesday for nearly two years before I finally quit. You're right; there are tons of rude people, but the nice ones at least make up for it a little bit. As a bit of encouragement, you should know that it does get easier with time. You pick up little "secrets" that will help you be faster taking the order and getting drinks and pretty much everything. Also, the better you know the menu, the easier your job will be and that also comes with time. If you decide to stay with your job, it'll probably get easier, but if you quit, you'll probably feel much less stressed. So either way, it'll work out for you. I never regret quitting, but I think it was a good experience to have as well. Good luck! |

I am really sorry you had a bad day. I worked at a cold stone a yr ago and I LOVED my job.. but Dang some of those people that came in... Just made me want to toss the ice cream in there face! Then on top of that they would not even tip us. It was a collage job and I didnt make much.. but every time I went in, I still tipped the girls on how many where in there (we had to share are tips). Don't let today get to you. Just think of it as one of those days and hope tomorrow is a better day.

| some people don't leave tips because they figure you make an hourly wage no matter what you do. but don't most waitresses make like under $3 hour and the tips are basuically the pay? when you pay alot at an expensive place also people don't leave tips bacause the food's expensive and so on . anyways i wouldn't do waitressing unless i absolutely had to! the general public is rude and doesn't think anything of people that work in places like resturants or gas stations and treats them like dirt because they can most the time get away with it. i'm not saying it's right but that's how they are. and don't forget the i'm never coming back here ever again just to see their rude smug faces a week later. ughhh.

Donating YT 11K Club Member | Wow I didn't think ppl would actually reply because it was so long but thank you guys for writing comments and understanding. The hourly wage we get is like $4.30 or something so I don't rely on that, I rely on the tips. I also learned it's better to work night shifts than morning shifts. And also because I don't like the ppl in the morning and I'm not a morning person. The only time where servers can make a lot in the morning is for Brunch! It get's hectic but I haven't worked those and I don't want to. Servers I work with that have been there a while even say they avoid working brunch because it's too crazy and not worth it. I don't know if I will stay in this job any longer because I can't take it. |

Thnx for the tips. I try to give ppl free stuff when I can. I just don't want them to call the manager on me. Never know who they are though so mostly I give free drinks to my friends and stuff. One really good thing is that my friend from high school came in with her friend and parents and I gave them free beers. They left me a $20 tip and a very nice comment card. So I was happy about that.
