Mandatory Neutering - Opinions?

I am so sick of hearing about cats, kittens, dogs and puppies being dumped beside the road to say nothing of seeing all of the poor inocents in shelters and needing rescue. And what about the poor little ones being abused because their owners don't care enough about them to feed them or treat them as living creatures with feelings. Creatures that feel pain! I know I am going to make some breeders mad with what I am about to say, but I think it is high time our government(s) get proactive with this ongoing problem. What are your opinions on mandatory neutering laws. I'm thinking that any owner with a dog or cat that is not owned specifically for breeding be required BY LAW to neuter it. In addition I wonder if there shouldn't be hefty kennel fees if one does own animals for breeding. I could go on but I fear offending someone. I just want opinions.

I agree thay there is a problem, but it is not coming from the planned breeding of purebred dogs. It comes from irrisponsible people that usually can't afford to feed the dog let alone get it spayed/neutered.

We we need is free spay neuter clinics. Initially it would cost the tax payers, but in the long run it would save because the number of dogs in shelters would be greatly reduced.

Most of the irrisponsible people are lower income. A firends of their cousin's boyfriend's neighbor's dog had puppies and they were giving them away. So they get this cute little puppy, that within 6 months is eating them out of house and home, so they turn it out, or chain it out and the cycle starts all over.

If they had mandatory spay/neuter laws, first of all they would be nearly impossible to enforce, and second, if you think yorkies are expensive now, what do you think one might cost if there were a shortage of them?

Lou, I fully understand your frustration with the strays, and I also am. However, the mandatory laws were passed in our area, IMO it has caused more of a problem, I am already seeing it. The people that were responsable in keeping up with shots, etc, have now become irresponsable by not getting their dogs their needed shots, they are afraid that with a vet visit their information will be turned over to the county. These people I am referring to do not fit in the lower income bracket.

We recently had an epidemic of Parvo and also the kennel cough and it was stated in the news paper article it was because people weren't keeping their dogs shots up. I can't tell you how many people I have personally heard say they won't either spay or neuter or get them micro chipped and therefore these things must be done to get their license or renewal of one. It will be interesting to see a year from now what a financial mess the animal shelters will be in because of the fact of not licensing all the dogs that were previously being done.

In my opinion this new spay/neuter mandatory law is going to prove to be a disaster.

We reside in the mountains and I have tried to tell those that have expressed the fact that their dogs are only on their property and not let loose, it is utmost important for the dogs to have their shots current, not only for them but for the humans too. So many wild life of rabbits, squirrels about and the rabbie thing really scares me. I totally am for the micro chipping, however I am definately not for the mandatory spaying/neutering. How are these laws going to make responsable citizens out of irresponsable people, in my opinion there not, instead we are also seeing the opposite.

It is Jack and my understanding that the mandatory spay/neuter law passed in our area was to cut down on dogs running loose, due to the fact that so many people were being bit by strays and horses and also sheep being attacked by packs of strays.

Since the laws was passed it has not changed the issue of strays and dogs running in packs

You both make good points and I'm inclined to agree with you. If I wasn't looking for a cause I am now. Free neutering clinics and stiffer penalties for abusers. Where do I sign up?

I agree something has to be done. Low cost neutering/spaying will help but there arer still a lot of people breeding for the wrong reason, ie my kids want to see the miracle of birth, a way to get money etc. There are way to many people breeding dogs so far from their breeds standard that it is getting harder and harder to find a true represenatation of some breeds. I do not have an answer but it is so heartbreaking to see the number of innocent animals lingering in shelters or being euthanized. JMO

And I have heard a lot of people say that they wanted their female dogs to have at least one litter before she was spayed. Why?
