| My kids know we're poor , when they ask for something that is pricey, I never hesitate to explain to them what expensive means and how we just can't do it right now. If they bicker about it, I ask them if they'd rather have a mommy that works and buys them nice toys while they go to a babysitter, or a mommy that stays home and plays with them and picks them up from school, etc. They always pick me staying at home with them. I also tell them to save their money for things that are really expensive. One year we were really strapped and I bought them like a 2 dozen things that cost like $1-2 each and individually wrapped each one, they had a ball unwrapping all these silly things and they really played with all of them. Xmas time is a good time to reinforce the values of your family, and it doesn't have to include that really expensive doll. Although I know how you feel and that you'd really like to get it for her... How old is your daughter? |

| What is an american girl doll? Is there a pic of it somewhere? I can't imagine $100 for a doll but then again, there was the cabbage patch kid craze when I was a kid and I think they were even more |

| I wanted an american girl doll my whole life. They are the girls from the books that are out. Growing up it was just me, my mom and two younger sisters so she didn't have any money to buy us a lot of stuff. She was really open about how we really couldn't afford things like that and I realized that she was doing the best she could for a single mom. We always had food on the table, clothes on our back and a roof over our head and that is all that really matters. Try talking to her about how much the doll costs and see if she would like any of the $20 dolls that are out there. Maybe get her into porcelain dolls if she doesn't really play with them. I have like 30 that I have collected over the years and you can get them really cheap.

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | The American Girl Doll is a fad now for girls, (a girl in her class told her if she dont get a doll soon, then she (my daughter) cant be in there group!) I told her friends like that, you dont need or want! They have books and dvd's and the dolls of course, but they are outragously priced! $100 for a doll is just silly! I told her she probably wont get it, if she was a only child that would be different, but I have 2 other daughters and I swear the older they get, the more expensive they get lol maybe I will win the lottery before xmas lol |

| They are $87 on the American Girl site for most of the dolls, including the one that you have them make just like the recipient. Here is a coupon code I found online -- "American Girl just released a $10 off of $30+ coupon—just use code 151676. I’m not sure when it expires." I don't know if it is still good or not. There are also some on ebay -- here is one that ends in 43 minutes and is only up to $25 so far http://cgi.ebay.com/Christmas-Set-23...QQcmdZViewItem Has anyone ever taken one of those surveys that give huge rewards? There is actually one for a Free American Girl Package. But I always figure they are some sort of scam. Still..... I read on here about someone getting a free ipod or something so some of them must work. http://www.games-toys-rewardpath.com...ican+girl+doll Here is the link -- just be careful.

| Missy- They also have a miniature of each of the American Girls that are $20 each. I know it isn't exactly the same thing, but might that work?

| Sorry -- I just came back to say I missed that the doll was not included -- just a Christmas set up. I love the dolls that they pick their own features. Cute having a doll looking just like the girls. I had not seen the minatures -- maybe that will be your alternative. I looked around cause I know what it is like when you can't get them exactly what they want. We had some very tight Christmases over the years and had to get a little creative. But somehow they wound up loving whatever they got.

| I asked for a Kirsten doll for 2 years when I was little. I never played with dolls either. Finally I got it and I NEVER played with it. I took the hair out once and brushed it and a bunch fell out so I never played with it again. This summer someone came to my garage sale and said she was looking for one because her niece wanted one but they could only pay $30, so I went upstairs and took it out of the box and sold it to the lady. I think that made me feel better than actually getting the doll. If your daughter really doesn't play with dolls she probably wants it because all of her friends have it... I wanted one because I read the books.
