| Homework Help My son has an assignment that I think is stupid but none the less it needs to be done. Once again I am calling on my YT buddies to help. Here it is: He is to choose a "student freedom" and come up with 15 facts and 15 opinions on it and then make a collage. The example they gave was "Students should be allowed to put any stickers that they want to on their binders" We have been wracking our brains and have decided on "Students should be free to chew gum during school" (lame I know...) Anyway, Facts or opinions please??? (pro or against) This assignment is really weighing him down--so much so that he is working on his vacation to get it done. Please help if you can--thanks!

| Well , chewing gum has been known to prevent tartar build up on teeth. I guess that could be a pro.

| students should be free to take over the counter drugs (like aspirin and ibuprofen) at school. Believe it or not, in some places, this is a punishable offense. |

| Students should be free to express unpopular opinions (political, religious, etc) without reprisal. Students should be free to leave the words "Under God" out of the pledge of alliegance. Not everyone believes in God, but that does not mean they are not good Americans. Students should be free to make constructive criticism regarding curricula, teaching methods, or school policies without penalty or reprisal. Students should be free to attend school without fear of bullying. Students should be free to attend school without having to sell candy bars, raffle tickets or other items to fund school programs. Kids should not have to raise money for their own educations. Funding is the job of the parents and the educational system. Students should be free to pray at school, but it should be on their own time and in a separate location from other students who do not wish to pray. Except at religious or private schools, praying should never be required. Students should be free to go to clean and safe bathroom facilities whenever they need to go. |

| Why Is Gum Prohibited in School? | eHow.com Against chewing gum I would also get some pictures to attach to the collage of people chewing gum while they appear to be studying or pictures of gum or whatever to put on there too.

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | Chewing Gum - if students were allowed to chew gum in school, they wouldn't feel a need to hide it under desks, etc, when they're done with it. In my middle school, gum was absolutely banned. But there was gum EVERYWHERE from kids who spit it out instead of throwing it away. Now in high school, we're allowed to chew gum, and the gum goes no where but the garbage.

| Relative to the "cons" of gum chewing... My high school was a private, all girls school and we were not allowed to chew gum. Rationale? It was not lady-like. Our headmistress hated gum chewing and thought it made her pristine young ladies look like cows. We all snuck it anyway and as a result learned to be more discrete gum chewers. I have to admit it is pretty gross when you see someone knawing away with their mouth open and the gum cracking LOL... I think of her everytime I see someone like that and just laugh a bit to myself |

| I would say a pro would be to releave stress while taking a test. Having something to chew is calming.

| Pro It can help some people concentrate. Con Listening to somebody chew gum, especially during a test, can be really distracting and irritating.

| I know you guys are probably saying what is wrong with chewing gum? Well... the problem is that it gets stuck everywhere and even end up on the sole of shoes. Why??? Some people just do not care where it ends up. It cost a lot of time and money to get the gum off floors, walls, desks, you name it. It is the the ones that do not care, that ruin it for the rest that do care. Sorry. Just reality. I think the teacher wants the students to realize that we do have rights, as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. Example: You can turn up your bass on your speakers, as long as it does not interfer with others' rights. I had a teenager that lived a few doors down from me and turned up his bass all the time on his car. Well, he finally made me mad when my baby was having a hard time going to sleep and when I finally, after hours, got him down for his nap the kid down the street turned up the bass and woke up my son. I walked down and handed him my baby and asked him to get him down for his nap. He finally got the hint. It was so bad, he caused my nick nacks on my cabinets to move and vibrate. I also believe that when you are in a car driving down the street, you should not have to listen to others' music due to the bass cranked up so high. Then my rights are not being preserved and taken into account. It is being thoughtful to others that should be considered when we do something. Good luck with his project. | Here are a few more with students in mind: You have a right to speak your mind in class if it is not rude/bulling, no swearing, or x-rated. Same thing goes for clothing or stickers. You have a right to speak in class as long as it does not take valuable time away from others learning. You have the right to learn in class. You have the right to learn in a safe environment.
