my 6 year old (almost 7) daughter is asking me how I am going to get the baby out of my belly LOL She has always thought (assumed...because I never told her this) that the doctor cuts your belly off and the baby comes out. but now she is asking how it really comes out. oye...I hate to lie to her...but I just don't know if it is a good time to tell her where it really comes out LOL

There is a fabulous book out there called "Where Did I Come From". It has cartoony pictures but tells the story well. Now might be the appropriate time.

It is probably 20+ years old, but was VERY well written. Even if you choose not to be specific now, I would recommend it for later.

One caution, one you get the book, make sure she doesn't sneak it in her backpack for show & tell as my son did!! Apparently, when he pulled it out, he opened to the most graphic photo to show the class. Needless to say, when I picked him up that afternoon and the teacher informed me this was not an appropriate show and tell item, I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me!!!!!!!! I think my son was in 3rd grade

I was always a firm believer in being totally honest. Usually at that age you can give a brief quick answer without going into too many details but I'd rather have them learn the truth from me than find out I lied. My 13 year old still comes to me with things of that nature and I'm glad I started the conversations when he was too young to know how uncomfortable I was. There were many things I wish he wouldn't ask but ultimately, I was glad he came to me and not his friends and if I wanted that to continue, I needed to be honest with him.

these are exactly my thoughts.....but I don't want to open up a can of worms...because she talks a LOT at school LOL but then again...i don't want to give her false info...and risk someone else telling her more that what I tell her LOL

My oldest son asked me that too when he was 6. He had found a book I had with pictures showing the progress and delivery (didn't know he found it) But he told me that the baby will come out of my hairy butt! I was driving at this time, almost wrecked!

exactly. I guess some people say that the baby is taken out of your belly...because technically, that CAN happen so it is not a lie. and it makes more sense to the kid. but I think that it is best I tell her the "other route". especially since that is most likely the route the baby will be taking LOL

My son was 6 when Olivia was born. We explained both routes to him. We were honest yet age appropriate. After she was born he came prancing in the room and (loudly) asked, "Well, did they have to cut your belly or was she able to be squeezed out your tootie OK?"
