| Can you tell me about Maltese? Our vet recommended a Maltese. We were talking to her because we are wanting to add a house dog to our family. We wanted a yorkie and I have been researching them as much as I could. This forum has been awesome and I'm so glad I found it. She said we might want to consider a Maltese as well. I've been researching them now as well. I had noticed where some posters her have both Yorkies and Maltese. I would love to hear all the info on Maltese that you could share. And those of you that have both how are they different vs alike. There doesn't seem to be many Maltese for sale in this area but tons of Yorkies...this scares my because I know the backyard breeders are everywhere!! |

| Hello I have both a yorkie and a maltese...they are both great dogs! The yorkie has more energy and the maltese is definitely a lap dog and if allowed will lie in your lap for hours. The yorkies I feel have a bit more personality but that may be just between my little boogers! Either way, I think you'll be happy!

| I have a yorkie and a maltese too They are both wonderful breeds, and I've said it a million times, but they complement each other so well!

| I had a maltese(that was my one puppy that had hypoglycemia), but, I rehomed her when she was around 3 as she was a high pitched barker and whiner, and hubby works out of the hosue a lot, and so is on his business phone a lot..she was sweet and loved to be held, but, was a terrible chewer and then of course the constant barking |

| I've ownded 3 Maltese and I have 3 Yorkies now! The Maltese seem to be more "yappy" (barkers) and seem to require a bit more attention. Also keep in mind, their hair is much harder to maintain! And you often have lots of white hair everywhere, even though they "don't shed." Now...could be just my luck, but one Maltese has severe anxiety issues, my second Maltese was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at the age of 1 and the 3rd one I got was already over a year old and had some bad habits and also showed signs of anxiety. So based on MY experience, Yorkies fit my family a little better, though Maltese are gorgeous and loving lapdogs ;-)

| Just like with every type of dog, you have to pick the maltese with the personality that will fit your lifestyle best. Their coats are harder to maintain if you keep them in a long coat and take them outside often, but if they are mostly inside dogs, you just have to keep their faces clean and stuff that you normally do with yorkies. Maltese have a great temperament and are very loving. Miko and Emma are best buds

| We have both a Yorkie and Maltese. I love Twinkles to death he is the greatest little brat. Maltese though are psychotic!!! He looks at you with those big black eyes like, PAY ATTENTION TO ME OR ELSE!!!! He also whines when he isn't getting attention and his bark is an annoying yip. I love him to death. I want another Maltese and a Biewer. |

| Although I don't currently own one, I plan to have a Maltese one day. They are beautiful, sweet dogs. They were bred to be companions unliked yorkies that were bred to hunt so maltese tend to not have that prey-drive like yorkies. They also tend to me more of a lap dog than most yorkies. Their hair is pretty similar to a Yorkie's, although even more high-maintenance because they are white, and I've heard their hair tends to matt easier than most yorkies as well. A great forum to check out is www.spoiledmaltese.com

| I have two Malts and 1 Yorkie. I will always have a Maltese in my life. They are wonderful dogs. They are loyal and playful. Mine are not yappy at all. Their upkeep is a tiny bit harder than my Yorkie only because they are white and their coat is currently longer than my Yorkie. They have the most expressive eyes also. I just love both breeds and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them at all. You can find quiet a bit of information on them on YT sister site MT. www.maltesetalk.com

| I have Yorkies and a Maltese. They do great together. My Malt is wonderful. She seems to be so much more loving than the Yorkies, or maybe she is just more expressive about showing it. She always makes me laugh - even on those horrible days. I keep mine in a short cut cause I do not want to deal with the long hair. So, it is easy to care for now. I have not noticed any shedding with mine, either. She loves to play and have fun but she is also very content to sleep on my lap. She was much easier to potty train than the Yorkies. I love her and am very glad I got her!!! Come on over and visit at Maltese Talk!! |

| I have a maltese as well. She is a lot calmer than Benji is. She likes to bark and whine a lot more than Benji. Everyone else pretty much sumed it up for you. I love my Bella though and it is perfect having one of each!

| My Lady is my first Maltese and I am absolutely in love with the breed! As MyFairLacy said, Yorkies were bred to hunt vermin, but Maltese were only bred to be lap dogs and companions to the wealthy.... and they know it! They didn't have to work back then and they certainly don't intend to start now. Lady is very quiet. She only barks to talk to me, err, boss me around. She tells me when it's time for supper, time to get up, etc. She never barks at noises or strangers. I think the fact that Maltese are a little harder to find is a plus as you say. Backyard breeders have done a number on Yorkies, sadly. I see so many Yorkies that don't even look like like Yorkies now. The health problems, especially liver shunts, are the result of careless breeding. Yorkies are now thirty-six times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined. Whether you choose a Maltese or Yorkie, though, it is important to find a reputable breeder who is health testing, breeding to the standard and follows the breed club's code of conduct and ethics. Whether you end up with a Maltese or Yorkie will probably depend on your family, lifestyle and what you want in a dog. If you want to learn more about Maltese, please join us on http://spoiledmaltese.com/forum/inde...ese.com/forum/ You will find a lot of YT members belong over there, too. It's a great source of information about the breed and a great place to find a reputable breeder. |
