My little Ty died Aug 26, Need information

I lost my 2 year old yorkie this friday, Aug 26. He had a vet annual visit mon Aug 22, and given a clean bill of health. The vet told me Ty had one baby tooth that needed pulled and his teeth cleaned. I made the appointment for friday. I was called mid-day, procedure went well, I could pick him up at 4:30. I received a phone from the vet less than 2 hr later stating Ty was going into pulmonary edema and may not make it. My husband and I rushed to the vet's office, Ty was very ill. The vet told me Ty had went into cardiac arrest before the procedure started, He was given meds, CPR...once "they got him back" he was then putted to sleep for the elective procedure. I was not called concerning the cardiac arrest, given no reason for why it happened. I am so hurt. I feel the vet was not honest with me and I lost my Yorkie. Is there anyone I can report this to? Any suggestions would be appreicated.

They went ahead and administered anesthesia for an elective procedure to a dog that had just had CARDIAC ARREST???!!!!???!!! Please tell me they did not do that!!! Please - I cannot think that a vet would do that!!! I cannot deal with the risk they were willing to take - and it ultimately apparently cost your little dog his life! HORRIBLE!!! Ask whatever vet associations he belongs to for an investigation into this unbelievable practice! I cannot believe any vet worth his salt would proceed to anesthetize under these circumstances!

I too, find it hard to believe, that he was sedated AFTER having gone into cardiac arrest and 'brought back'. I mean, what kind of Vet would do that? I like to think that mine would have called and said ' hey, little problem, here's what happenened; and we will NOT be doing an elective procedure today."

It would seem much more likely (though still rare) that he suffered cardiac arrest DURING the procedure and after the anesthesia was administered.

However, they called and said he was doing well . . . so I do not know.

I would hope that had Tibbe gone into cardiac, my vet would have been given ICU treatment, Tibbe's cardiac status monitored and supported and he would be watched for a possible recurrence or stroke and a call placed to me to come to the vet ASAP so I could participate in his ongoing cardiac health status and be there for him, where I would want to be.

They really had no idea what caused the arrest so should have stopped all planned surgery or whatever was planned and just monitored/treated that cardiac event and notified you immediately! Who in the world would go ahead with any procedure or x-ray or anything with a dog who's heart had just stopped without giving that event major treatment status unless the dog is bleeding to death or something like that without needed surgery? This cannot be normal vet procedure, can it?????

I agree with the others. I KNOW my vet would never put one back to sleep after an episode like that. I am not the smartest cookie but I would have known better. I would also ask for an investigation(sp) And I would consult another vet with all my pets records to see what they say. If you can find one that will do that. SO SORRY for your loss. I believe your vet is responsible for the loss of your baby. So sad. I know your heart is breaking. Sending prayers your way.................Again I am so sorry

So sorry for your loss! I can't imagine why the vet would continue with the procedure.....and, why they didn't call you and tell you about his cardiac arrest.

This is horrible,my prayers are with you. I can't imagine the pain you are feeling and the loss of your baby. I can't believe a vet would do this. As much as I love my vet and used him for 15 years I would be extremely upset if this happened to one of mine. I am not sure what you need to do.

call a dog law attorney something does not sound right to me. Why would you do a procedure on a dog that had cardiac arrest prior to the procedure. Get it in writing and tell them you want a copy of their files. good luck and best wishes.

I'm so sorry. The vet was an a..h... to go ahead and do an elective procedure AFTER your dog went into cardiac arrest. He should not be practicing. He's very lucky it wasn't my dog. He wouldn't have to worry about being sued that would be the least of his worries.

I do not see how that could possibly be a normal vet procedure. I agree with everything you said.

I am floored that a vet would actually do this - unless something got lost in translation somewhere.

I am so hurt I was not called after the cardiac arrest. I would not have had the procedure done after that. Yes the cardiac arrest happened and then the procedure was done after he "recovered". Both my husband and I are nurses. We asked why the procedure was done after the arrest, why we were called, the answer we got, "well, that's hind sight." While standing at the table next to by baby the tech took his temp..his temp was 95..I asked why he was not under a warmer, answer, "we have him wrapped in a towel, I did have a hair dryer trying to get him warm but that was loud". He wasn't placed on a heating pad until I ask. It was awful...I had taken my dogs here for their annual exams for 2 years. They have never been sick. Ty was only 2y old. I don't want money. I want the vet to never do this to someone else.

Well, I am no vet but I would be willing to make a good-sized bet that no elective surgery protocol in veterinary medicine states to prep for surgery, administer pre-op medications, time-out for cardiac resuscitation and stabilization, proceed with administering pre-op anesthesia and elective surgery!!! Call owner once pulmonary edema develops.

I am so very sorry for your terrible loss and all the awful things that happened to your little Ty. I cannot imagine the pain that you are feeling but hopefully getting to the bottom of why he had to die and stopping it from happening again will help you some. God bless you.
