does anyone know what causes puppies to have their intestines be outside when they .. are born? It seems like I've read about it alot on here lately. Is it pretty common, but usually unspoken of? Or is it from something that happens in pregnancy? Just curious... thanks... deb

I dont know the reasons for the birth defects, but From inside the womb, you can see that the embryos of a pup are about the size of a pea when they're 20 days old. By day 30, the embryos are the size of a grape and the puppies have beating hearts. As the puppies develop, their intestines grow outside the body because there's not enough room inside. As the puppies get bigger, the intestines slowly move into their abdomens. but some times theres a problem and they dont go in, most likely the pup will die before or after birth. It just happens its a birth defect

| Yorkieshadow gave a great explanation. Wasn't there someone on here who had a puppy who was born with intestines on the outside, but they were able to save the pup? I think the intestines started to go inside. I can't remember the whole story.

I have a friend who's skin baby was born that way. They thought it was going to be a big operation when he was born, but they just had to poke them back inside and basically put a band aid over it. He's a healthy little 3 year old now

Wow! I didn't know that was how they developed. So it's like they are developing normally, and then something happens as they get to the stage where they are supposed to go inside.... hmmmm. Thanks for the replies...very educational... deb
