| First Puppy - Maltese or Yorkie? HELP! Hey Everyone I'm getting my first puppy soon but dont know whether to get a maltese or a yorkie! I am planning on getting both but 1 a year later than the other and would like to know from people who have both breeds what one would be the best 1 to get first? I have had 2 dogs when i was younger but i wasnt their main carer so i'm looking for some help. Any suggestions for a first time buyer? I want to make sure I am making the right decision and am doing as much research I can as a first time buyer. I would greatly appreaciate any info but here are a few sample questions: 1. how much should i expect to spend on my puppy? 2. How often do you have to take your dog to the vet? 3. How often do they need to get shots? 4. How much do shots cost? ..and anything else you guys think I should know!! Thanks so much! |

| This is for a yorkie: 1. I would expect to pay 800 and up. 2. I take them to the vet around 4 times once I get them, and then if an emergency comes up. 3. My vet give them the shots when I bring them there first 4 times, which is almsot a month apart. Then after that every year. BUt you have to remember, are you going to spay/neuter thats money and are you going to microchip? I would reccommend both of those. 4. The shots can be anywhere from 50-200$ depending on your vet. YOrkies are expensive to keep up, so I would make sure that you always have some money on you that way you can pay the vet bills. I have spent well over a grand on both of mine, and haven't even had them for a year!!! Thats just vet bills. They will need food, which is $10 every 2 weeks for me. They will need a cage around $50. Toys, treats, Nutrical, potty pads )if you train them that way) blankets.. a lot of stuff. I would do A TON of research before buying either one. |

| I have both a yorkie and a maltese, and I absolutely love both breeds My yorkie came first, and when he was almost 3 yrs old, we bought our 7 month old maltese. That was in February of this year. They get along great For a yorkie, I would say you should expect to spend at least $800 probably more depending on your area, and for a maltese, I would say from a reputable breeder, they start at $1000 for a male and more than that ($1500 and up) if you want a female. I do know of one reputable maltese breeder that sells her pups for under $1000, so it's not impossible When you first get your pup, you will have to pay for some shots...It's been a long time since we got the puppy shots, so I can't remember how much. Maybe someone else can help you with that. You should have money set aside for emergencies or at least have a credit card that you can use for emergencies for the dog(s). At the very least, the dog should get an annual check-up once it has received its puppy shots.

| Yorkies are more expensive than Maltese I think . . . find a good breeder that will provide you with a happy, healthy baby . . one that would at least guarantee you with no genetic defects . . . I have 2 and other than shots and a few diahreas here and there at the beginning when they are still young and I was a newbie, I don't pay much anything on vet bills . . . .and I think that is because I ended up with both healthy babies Good luck on your search. |

| I think the Maltese may be less expensive when it comes to vet bills. I'd imagine the price for shots, food, etc. would be the same for either dog. What are you leaning towards?

| Hey you, I told you this would be a better place to ask this question than on dogchat seen as we're all yorkie owners If you eventually plan to get both then I don't think it really matters which you get first, as you know I have 3 yorkies and plan to get a maltese. Depending on the breeder and area of the country yorkies are around £400-£600 and Maltese are around £1200-£1900. I pay about £60 for the initial puppy vaccines and around £35 for each annual one. I have had to visit the vets for a few other things over the years such as Indy's cyst removal and when Ben bruised his leg. Not very often though. Good luck |

| I always planned on getting a Yorkie when I became an empty nester, but my little Maltese Lady came into my life as a rescue which is why I ended up with a Maltese. I'm not sure about Yorkie prices, but Maltese prices have gone through the roof in the past few years. The starting price for a female Maltese from a reputable breeder is $2,000, males are about half that. The biggest difference between the two breeds is in personality. Yorkies are terriers and are high energy, lively little dogs. Maltese are spaniels and much more mellow and laid back. Which personality would fit your lifestyle best? I think your idea of getting one of each sounds like the best of both worlds! |

| I agree with the Malt costing more and the grooming is much more on the Malt but they are sooooo sweet. I have both & love them both but the Yorkie wants to play with hubby and the Malt just wants to lay in my lap. |

| Guess I won't be much help to you either, I own both and adore both. The prices are about the same for each breed here in this neck of the desert. |

| Yes, maltese prices have gone up significantly more than yorkies. Like I said, you will be hard pressed to find a female maltese for under 1500, and that's on the super low end. Most start at $2000. But males may go for $1000-$1700. I love both breeds so much, and they compliment each other so nicely

| Hi, I have both. I paid 2500 for my Maltese. If you want to breed it is way more. I have great appreciation for those that breed. WOW! I just got my Yorkie. I got her on Saturday. I found a lady that breeds both Maltese and Yorkies. I did not get my Maltese from her though. I have been putting both of the girls in the same house (cage) at night for bed. I have not had any all night crying. So far my Gucci (Yorkie) has been very good about going outside to poo. I take her out on a leash, and give her a salmon treat after her job is done. She has been getting closer to the wee wee pad, but not hit it yet. Good luck, both of them are sooo much like babies. Bella (Maltese) always want to be with me. Upstairs, downstairs, in my lap. They love being held like babies. |
